“Very nice hotel, excellent location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

We stayed for 2 nights in September. Hotel is cosy and has authentic features such as wooden staircase (they also have the lift though!). Our room (deluxe double) was rather small but had small balcony and beautiful marble bathroom with bath and separate shower. Service is very attentive, we had all our needs cared for, all questions answered and a table at flamenco place booked. But the real benefit of this hotel is it's location - 7 min from Prado, 15 min from Plaza Mayor and about 25 min from Royal Palace. All walking distances through lovely streets (don't forget about chocolaterie near Plaza Mayor - exceptional!). And the area where hotel is full of history - and very entertaining - bars, restaurants, theatres. We loved it!

Was initially assigned to room 112. The A/C did not work and room had a strange smell. After asking for someone to check the A/C unit and confirming it was out of order I was given room 112, more comfortable, the A/C worked and no strange smell.

I was very disappointed with not only this hotel, but the hotel chain in general. Our party of 3 had originally made plans to stay at the Catalonia Las Cortes for our first trip to Spain. These reservations were made a month or so in advance of our trip. LESS than 24 hours before we were to check in to the Las Cortes, we received an email saying they were moving us to the Catalonia Atocha due to a reservation malfunction (please read my review of the Catalonia Atocha and our horrible customer service experiences there). Luckily I had my IPhone so that I saw the email immediately when it came in and was able to respond that we would accept the change so at least we had hotel rooms upon our arrival in Madrid the next morning. The hotel staff at the U232 in Barcelona was able to help to determine if our entire party was being moved or just 2 of us.

My problem, in addition to the late notice, is the fact we weren't given options. Yes, they provided complimentary breakfast, but help me to understand why when I went to the Las Cortes website on the day we received the email saying we wouldn't have any rooms, I found the same rooms we had reservations for still available for the same days we requested, albeit at a much higher rate.
When I asked for room upgrades I was told of course if there is availability at the Atocha. You know, as a customer service professional, I know there is always some availability for emergency situations. How hard would it have been to contact the Atocha and guarantee two room upgrades instead of responding that we could have the upgrades IF there is availability at the Atocha.

So, I would really have loved to stay at the Catalonia Las Cortes, but sadly that wasn't the case and was booked at a hotel with poor customer service. Also be aware and read other reviews because our experience with being rebooked somewhere else due to a reservation malfunction was not an anomaly.

It is sad to say, but because of the way we were treated by the Catalonia Hotel chain (including the Catalonia Atocha), not to mention some of the restaurants in the area, we won't return to Madrid anytime soon, nor will we recommend this hotel chain to others.

The hotel is in a convenient location. It's just 50 meters from Plaza Santa Ana and nearby there are many bars, restaurants and shops.
I booked a double superior room and It seemed almost a suite. It was very large, the bed was kin-size, there eas a stools at the foot of the bed, a chair and really a lot of space. The bathroom was nice with a full kit of toiletries.
Breakfast good but expensive.

The best aspect of this hotel is its location, 20 metres from Plaza Santa Anna and with many of Madrid's attractions within 10/15 minutes walk. Whilst it is very pleasant,it has no "kerb appeal" and is not the palacial luxury that their website suggests. The staff are helpful and friendly. We booked a superior room that was spacious and comfortable, but did not justify the cost of 230 euros per night, room only. Almost adjacent are both the Vincci Soho and Room mate Alicia both of which I suspect offer better value for money. Don't use the hotel's taxi service back to the airport - it costs 12 euros more than the street taxi.

Room Tip: Probably not worth the extra for a superior room

Very civilized, pleasant place in a wonderful location. Good rooms, modern bathrooms, full breakfast. One of the few places we saw in the country where you can find a king bed, as opposed to two twin beds pulled together. Helpful, cheerful staff. The only drawback is that given that the location is so central, it is not easy to get to by car; but then driving in Madrid is not a great experience for those who are not used to it.

We stayed in this hotel a total of 4 nights. It is ideally located. The rooms are very nicely finished. The area is quiet, but very close to all the actions of Madrid. The staff is extremely nice and helpful, very courteous and responsive. Initially we booked 2 nights before heading to Andalusia. then we decided to book additional 2 nights after our Andalusian excursion. Both rooms were great but the 2nd room was a little warm as it got afternoon sun and the AC turns off when the card is not inserted in the slot. I highly recommend this hotel. WiFi worked well for us and it was free. Breakfast Buffet is good but expensive. We ate there once. There are so many cafes and restaurant around the area to choose from.
