“Excellent food and local craft beer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014 via mobile

I had a poppyseed, chocolate and tofu cake with a local Madrid beer and it was fantastic. Even if you aren't vegan they have one of the best craft beer selections around. A must for beer nerds searching for something decent in Madrid.

“Almost excellent!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

We have visited Rayen twice in less than a week. On our first visit which was on a Saturday lunch time we had a wonderful menu selection. We ordered to share mediterrenean Whin which is a delicious vegetable tapenades served with surdough bread. Also we had The Delights From The Garden Salad with a beautiful balsamic dressing. We had two main courses to share too; Pastel De Choglo, vegan version of a typical Chilean dish with fresh corn, aubergine, basil and cumin and Gratinado de Verduras-baked gratin with grated vegetables - once again, beautifully seassoned. However on our our second visit during the week the menu was very limited. We had a choice of two starters and two main courses. The starters were; spinach soup or a spinach tart and the main courses were either white rice with beans or white pasta with an olive pesto sauce which we thought they could have used brown rice and wholemeal pasta which nutritionally are much better for you. Personally if they do not improve their mid-week menu I would only go there on the weekends.

Dear Ibrahim,

first of all thank you for visiting us, we are glad you appreciated our plates and creations. As you might know, we are a familiar organic restaurant. Our philosophy is to prepare everything as fresh as possible, therefore we don't freeze anything, nor we use microwaves in any case. This is the reason why during the week we offer the choice between four dishes for the daily menu. We change the set menu daily, to offer variety to our clients that come to eat lunch everyday. If we had everything all the time this would mean either that the food had to be frozen, or that we should throw away a lot of it each day, since it's organic, it doesn't last vey long. None of the option seemed sustainable or ethical to us. Just a quick mention of the meal: the pasta was of wholemeal flour, the rice wasn't, because we decided that the soft flavor oft he white one was more appropriate to combine with the lima beans. Also, some of our clients cannot eat wholemeal flour, so we try to give at least one option. As we also offer in each daily menu two gluten free option at least. Consider everything is handmade with much attention and care, included the bread. In any case, it is a pleasure for us to attend such gentle and educated person like you both, and we were happy to see you back yesterday for lunch. Best wishes, Rayén team.

“BUENISIMO!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2014

Excellent food, I had the brunch it was delicious, healthy, tasty, really nice fresh juices. Staff was extremely friendly, place is 'acogedor', very warm, relaxing. Would definitely go back, ohhh they have "kombucha" a must try for the spanish public who yet don't know of it... Loved the place! small suggestion: I would love to see some 'vegan raw' desserts on the menu!
Great value for money!

“Thank goodness for this place!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

So, Madrid is just about the least vegan-friendly place I've ever been to. Seriously. It's appalling. However, vegans can find a great meal at Rayen Vegano for a reasonable price. The menu is limited, but everything on it is quality. We went our first day in town, and then we went back because my boyfriend, who isn't even vegetarian, wanted to since he liked it so much. Their bread is heaven! Make sure you order it. It's several days later, and we still are talking about it! You really can't go wrong here. It's all so well done, and the place itself is charming. The staff are also very friendly. In a city full of meat and cheese, this is a happy oasis!

“A small gem of vegetarian and vegan food in Madrid”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014 via mobile

This place is owned by a couple dedicated to organic, fresh and good quality ingredients. They only opened 3 months ago as of this writing. I hope they thrive because our brunch was delicious-- the fresh kiwi/banana smoothie was great, the tofu scramble was served in a hot pot, potatoes were broiled just right and the fruits were great. They also have gluten free and vegan selections. It's a small place and a little hard to find but don't give up, it's worth it! It's 5 minutes from Thyssen museum.
