“Bait and switch on lousy buffet: be careful!”
Reviewed April 3, 2009

Overall, a decent hotel in a convenient, but dicey, part of Madrid. We were only staying one night on the way home from a beautiful trip to Sevilla. The hotel was okay -- nothing special. The bathrooms are ridiculous -- be forwarned that the the bathroom doors are glass, and the frosting is incomplete. The showers are also glass, so that my two teenaged daughters had to remain away from the bathroom while their father used the lavatory or shower. Streets were very loud all night -- not unexpected for the Puerta del Sol, but inconvenient if you're a light sleeper.

The biggest problem we had was with breakfast. When we came back from lunch and got the key to our rooms (they were not ready when we arrived, so we just left our bags and left for a few hours) the woman who gave us our keys told us there was a free buffet breakfast in the morning. That seemed convenient, as we had an early flight. When we checked out, we were charged 14 EUROS each for the buffet. The only signs for the buffet in the hotel say it is FREE, as did the woman. We had cereal, terrible coffee (from a machine, not even freshly brewed) and some fruit, and they charged us that kind of money. What a ripoff. The woman at the desk looked like she'd been through this drill before -- it's clearly a bait-and-switch they pull regularly. So disappointing. Ruined the last morning of what was a great vacation.

I was in Madrid for 2 days and this hotel is excellent for a short stay. It is in the middle of madrid and near the plaza del sol and very close to the metro stations, not that you really need to use it much because many of the popular attractions are within walking distance including the Spanish royal palace and Prado Museaum. Lots of shops and ATM's nearby and restaraunts but this is a very touristy part of the city so watch the prices. The breakfast is too expensive, if you go down the street you can find a cafe to eat in for half of the price.
Unique Qualities: There is free internet access in the lobby. This hotel probably has the best shower I have every used, there are 8 different shower spikets and a removable shower head. It is also very safe because staff have to buzz you in but is has a 24 hour desk.

just returned from 3 night stay in the High Tech Petit Palace, location is excellent, staff were friendly rooms were clean but very small, the window in our room was a velux therefore we could not see out the window and had no view. The shower was excellent although the glass door into the bathroom was clear glass. I think it is quite pricey for what you get, but its the location you pay for.

The best thing going for this hotel is the location, within walking distance of everything you would wish to visit in Madrid. The downsides are the reception staff ( don´t even expect a hola on arrival or the rest of your stay! ) Also don´t book a room unless you are an exhibitionist! For some reason there is a window in the bathroom door to watch your friends on the toilet through ??

The property is ideally located near the Plaza Mayor, Plaza del Sol, and the Red Line Metro. It is on a pedistrian walk street and is truly a great central location. The hotel has been recently renovated and is above average overall for a 3 star property.
However: there is a HUGE difference in actual rooms. Ours was a "executive/computer" room and was excellent. Lots of space, in room computer with free internet, etc. etc. Friends of ours had a room so small they had to share walking around the bed. They moved out.
Also, the hotel is directly accross from the # 1 club in Madrid...which opens at midnight and closes at dawn. Therefore, while a small balcony room seems nice, the noise factor is quite high from midnight to 6 A.M. Request interior/rear if you want to sleep soundly all night.
The buffet breakfast at 12 Euro is , at best, OK, - and there are 2 cafes including a Starbucks, within 1/2 block for morning coffee/breakfast. Vast array of bars, shops, and restaurants within a 2 to 3 block radius, including all of Plaza Mayor.
The staff was efficient and just OK on the friendliness meter.
Caution: there are about 10 HiTech Petit Palace hotels within a 3 mile radius so proceed cautiously to find the best one for your needs.....
Overall, we would most probably stay at a Petit Palace very near this one, but try to avoid the noise factor.
The location is a massive asset to this hotel.

Really impressed with this hotel, great location, just a few minutes from Plaza Mayor. Rooms were modern and clean, whilst still keep old characteristics in the hotel. Great shower/bathroom, the only strange thing was the glass panel in the bathroom door which meant you could see straight through, easily sorted with a large blanket from the wardrobe! Breakfast was extra but also good. Free internet access and safe in bedroom. Would definately stay there again.

In central Madrid just a minute from the Plaza Mayor. The hotel rooms were modern, spacious and cool. The character of the old hotel still remains in the staircase and the lift. The staff were friendly and the location excellent.
