“Worst Experience Ever. Avoid Like the Plague.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2009

We reserved a room—and paid a deposit—at the Hostal Playa nearly two months before arriving in Madrid from Morocco. We were exhausted and it was late, but when we arrived we discovered that they had our booking, but were booked solid. Unapologetically they recruited their sad-looking teenage employee (someone's son?) to lead us about a dozen blocks—to a worse neighborhood—to another hostal that was horrific. It looked like a crime scene, had a lower star rating, and they wanted to pre-pay for the room in addition (!) to holding out credit card. We walked.

To summarize our Hostal Playa experience:
No room.
No apologies.
No refund for our deposit.
I've traveled the world and NEVER written a review this mean, but this was—without a doubt—the worst hotel/hostal experience in my life.

First, a hostel in Spain is not the same as a hostel in most other places, which tend to lean strongly towards backpackers. A Spanish hostel is what would be called a Pension in France or Italy, and amounts to a 2-star hotel. They are nearly always a floor or three above street level, and usually have a lift/elevator.
Now, the Hostel Playa. This visit marked the first time I have ever been checked into a hotel by the chambermaid. Still, she was extremely helpful, going off to clean the room as we were there before 11am, and then explaining everything, even how to use the ‘Do not disturb’ sign on the door! And all without us speaking a word of a common language.
The hostel is situated right in the very centre of a major tourist area and, as in other city centres, it did tend to get rather noisy outside. I was awakened on two or three occasions by people leaving pubs at three or four in the morning with no consideration whatsoever for the many hundreds of people sleeping in the area. You must also be prepared for the sound of beer barrels being loaded and unloaded at six or seven in the morning.
I’d ordered a double for a week, even though my wife was only joining me for a couple of days, because most of us know how small a single room can be anywhere in Europe. The cost was 54 euros a night and the room was bright and of a decent size, and included a small balcony. There were double balcony doors, which kept at least some of the noise out. The room included air-conditioning, which was very efficient, and the bathroom was of an adequate size with bath/shower combined. The bed was comfortable. The only downside was no English language tv among the dozen or so stations. And the towels are as thin as it would be able to make them without rendering them useless. Surely decent towels wouldn’t cost them too much to provide, even in a budget hotel. There is a coffee machine in reception, and another machine with water and soft drinks. All cost 1 euro. Their website says it is open 24 hours, but reception is not. You are asked to pay your bill the night before if you are expecting to leave before 8am, and reception was usually deserted with no sign of staff.
So, don't go there expecting anything special, and you'll be satisfied and pay a great price for being in the middle of things.

The only thing missing was the canal plus on the TV, not a big issue at all. Double double glazing kept out most external noise.
Overall an absolute bargin, given it's location.

Don't be fooled by the pictures on Hostal Playa's web site--this is not a classy establishment! Even though we had a reservation and confirmation number, we were told (rather brusquely) when we arrived that there were no more rooms available. The owner(?) then informed us that she had a room we could have downstairs on the third floor. Not really caring what floor we stayed on, we said fine, we'd take the room on the third floor. We paid for the room before she took us downstairs, since "there is no card machine down there." Well, the third floor is actually another hostel entirely; an unrenovated, loud, dirty place, with terrible linens and bare flourescent bulbs for lighting... nothing like the place we were expecting to stay. Take my advice and stay away from this one.
