Excellent on all levels. Staff were absolutely wonderful. So welcoming and helpful. The room was immaculate and well decorated. Very clean with nice touches like the artwork and flowers. quiet even though we were at the front, aircon great in the summer heat. Amazing find especially at such a reasonable price. Going to Madrid? Go to hostal Barrera, you shan't be disappointed.

Ditto from the other reviewers on excellent location (easy, 10 minute walk from Atocha; close to museums) and plenty safe. The Cafe Plateria nearby has great coffee and people watching, there are good tapas bars nearby, and we walked everywhere from this hotel comfortably. The rooms are very quiet and modern with nice fixtures. And immaculate! While others have commented on the nice staff, they deserve another compliment. We felt very welcome. We arrived early, and after an overseas flight, it was wonderful to at least be able to leave our luggage as we began exploring while we waited for our room. Great hotel.

Just up the hill from Atocha station, on the first floor of a corner property, fronting partly onto the main road, and a side street, we had room 4 [ I think!] with bedroom to the side and bathroom onto Calle Atocha. For the money, it was excellent, mattresses maybe a bit firm for some tastes and soundproofing not the best, but overall we really had no complaints and found the staff very helpful. They don't do breakfast but there are plenty options nearby.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights last week, and could not have been happier with the hotel. Clean, comfortable, close to everything - all the museums are close by, one of the main streets of tapas bars is just a 5 minute walk away, and the Atocha train station is a 10 minute walk away. We arrived early in the morning and had not expected to check in early, but luckily a room was available. The staff was friendly, and I would recommend this place to everyone.

Trying to book a hotel in a large, unfamiliar city can be a daunting task, so imagine our relief when we finally walked through the doors at Hostal Barrera. From the moment we checked in until the day we sadly checked out, we were always greeted with smiles and cheer. The staff speaks English very well and are more than happy to offer you their local expertise in dining, public transportation options and visiting attractions. In fact, Franzesca went completely out of her way to help us with finding and booking transportation for an overnight trip to Segovia (not to be missed either)!

Our room was cozy and clean as was the bathroom and the dual-pane windows worked very well at keeping outside noise to a minimum. The bed was quite comfortable and the included wifi had a strong signal. While it is possible to hear noise from adjoining rooms, it was never at any level that caused us any concern.

Aside from its very reasonable pricing, one of the hotel's key advantages is its central location to everything. We always felt safe in the area - even when returning to the hotel at midnight (early by Madrid standards). The main train station, Atocha, is a 10 minute walk away and metro station Anton Martin is only 5 minutes up the street and Plaza Mayor is another 5 minutes further up. The 3 major museums are well within walking distance as well. As for dining options, just ask the staff and you can't go wrong. Malaspina was a great tapas bar nearby that had great food and even better sangria that seemed to be a favorite with the locals.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience our first time in Madrid and Hostal Barrera was a big reason why. You'll feel like family at this hotel - Nieves, Franzesca and Josefa will make sure of that.
