I stayed here in a twin room for two nights. The hotel couldn't be in a better location. The staff are really friendly and helpful. It was nice that we were able to leave our bags before and after we checked in / out. Very clean, large room and also some free toiletries and tissues which helped with my cold!! I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 71 was lovely.

Nice and clean, with a great location and good service... the only problem is the rooms with balcony to the Gran Vía are REALLY NOISY, there are sirens passing by every 5 mins and the glasses are not soundproof.... the hotel was warm... it could use a fridge to store what you buy in the market

The best of Santillán Hotel is its very friendly and helpful staff and its extremely good location, just in the center of Madrid (Gran Vía), and next to most of the tourist attractions. Keep in mind that Gran Vía is one of the busiest streets in Madrid, so think it twice in case you love staying in quiet surroundings. The only complaint to this lovely hotel is that it has some rooms face an interior courtyard where the counterweight of the lift is going up and down when somebody is using it (so avoid these rooms if you’re very fussy about night noises). However, the interior of the hotel is really quiet. Rooms are simple but clean enough and many of them ensuite. Many (if not all) of them have safe deposits that work with coins (very useful if you travel with much money, cameras etc). Although the rooms aren't very spacious, I think it's not a big problem unless you like spending most of your trip inside of hotel rooms. This hotel is located on the fifth and the eighth floor but its old glass elevator is very safe, quaint and is worth taking it. Also very nice is the entrance foyer of the building. Compared to other hotels in Madrid of similar category its rates are very reasonable. Another plus is that there is a store-room for free in case you need to leave your baggage for some time after checking out. I would recommend it, especially if you're thinking of doing a bit of sightseeing in Madrid.

I would have rated Hostal Santillan the full 5 stars for an excellent location, extremely friendly and helpful staff, spacious and clean rooms if the place wasn't so noisy.
My husband and I were extremely pleased with our stay but didn't quite imagine Gran Via is as busy as it turned out to be.
I generally don't have any trouble sleeping, but even I had a few really bad night because of the incessant noise from down below. A manager has offered to move us to a room with windows not facing Gran Via - but all the two rooms non-Gran Via-facing we've seen literally have windows facing the wall.
If you need a good clean centrally located place for a short stop-over, a night or two, when you know you'll just collapse and dose off - this is for you.
For a longer stay, consider something else.

Pros: Excellent location in the middle of Gran Via, a short walk away from everything you'd want to see in Madrid plus a metro stop metres away. Great price aswell, only 45 euro a night for a nice, simple and clean room with ensuite right in the guts of the city. Quiet hostal with decent views from the window.

Cons: No breakfast or common area. Needs a bit of a revamp, the overall vibe is bland and old. One staff member we encountered spoke English, however the owner didn't seem to know a word. She greeted us on arrival and her detailed instructions would've fallen on deaf ears if we didn't know a bit of Spanish.
