“Nice place, great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2007

The location (right behind Plaza Mayor in a pedestrian street) is hard to beat. My room was surprisingly quiet. The room itself was pleasantly furnished, comfortable and nicely sized considering that it was a single room. The shower was great! The only thing wrong was the tiny sink...

All in all, definitely nicer and less anonymous than other hostals I´ve tried in Madrid. And the price is hard to beat (I paid 25 euros for the single).

Highly recommended.

I stayed here with three friends after the Benicassim festival last year and found it excellent value for money. The staff are really helpful, they recomend places to go and things to do, provide you with maps of the city and generally make life easier. The restaurant owned by the same people is also very good although not very Spanish, they gave us free cava and a discount on our food there which was definately worth it. Brilliant location near all the main attractions and the sol square. All in all a brilliant way to end our time in spain. Highly recommended.

For 63 pounds per night, we have a comfortably sized room for 4. On the whole, the staff were friendly. However, we had a room facing the main street, which is a little noisy esp. on sunday nights. Also, the basin was leaking and the toilet flushes continuously, which is a real pain when you are trying to get good sleep at night. On the whole, I would still recommend the hostals if your priority is location and price.

I would give it 5 stars if they were not fixing the place up with heavy machinery (A lot of noise @ 10 am every day, but that is what I get for being out until 6am) and the shower would not drain well so the floor usually got wet. The staff was great, the room was small but clean and refurbished recently. Nice marble floors and the reception area was nice. Great location, very central! I would stay here again as it was very nice especially for about 35 euro a night for a single with AC and breakfast deliverd to your room every morning.

We stayed 2 nights at Hostal TIJCAL I, and the stay had good and bad points....

On the good hand the location was amazing, just through one of the arches leading out of Plaza Major... you could walk to the Royal Palace in about 10 minutes, to Puerto Del Sol in 5 minutes, and to the Prado in about 30 minutes. This central historical area was much prettier than staying at one of the many budget hotels on Gran Via for example. The staff were very helpful, with good English, and with a 24 hour reception. The decor was plain and simple, and well-maintained.

Bad points were I was unlucky to get a tiny room without a window, which was horribly stuffy and smelly, even with the air conditioning, but it was very quiet and let you sleep without being kept awake by the street cleaners (or daylight!)... whereas my friends had a bigger room with a lovely little balcony, but it was very noisy with the window open. To compensate, the staff offered us free use of the air conditioning, and a token for a bit of breakfast at a local cafe.

There was a small lift up to the hostal reception on the 2nd floor, or you can climb the treacherous well-worn stairs if you're feeling energetic.

Basically I would recommend it if you're looking a cheap room in the best area of town.. but don't expect 5* facilities.. but what do you expect for 30 Euros per person per night! And try to request a balcony...

I stayed at TIJCAL and I want to warn everyone not to stay here. Staff was pushy and impolite. They try to rip you off with the breakfast deal which is worthless as it is just some bread. Manipulative, clip joint. I was treated like dirt. Do not stay here whatever you bloody do.

I found a review of this hostal, just off the Plaza Mayor, in a BBC report so booked rooms there. Costing less than $75(Amer) per night, I was apprehensive about the quality: no need, it was excellent. Newly refurbished both rooms and bathrooms are fine. As important, there is an elevator! The staff are multi-lingual and among the most helpful I found in Spain.

A good breakfast can be found a few doors to your left at the Cafe Corner.

This was a better hotel, as well as more cost effective than others we've tried, and we will certainly return.
