“Good location, small room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

This place was recommended to me for its reasonable price and central location. I have no complaints about either of those, or the overall service quality, but my single room was a bit of a disappointment - very small and crammed with furniture, and also very dark. For some reason, it has no ceiling light, just two small lamps, on the bedstand and the writing desk, and since it faces the narrow sidestreet and the opposite building was covered in scaffolding at the time, I couldn't even see if it was sunny or cloudy outside.
The safe in the room is coin-operated, which means you need to put a euro coin every single time you need to open it, and you don't get the coin back. Not very convenient if you want to store things like extra cash or jewellery.

Just returned with a group of 11 girls for a birthday trip. Good hotel, decent typical Spanish breakfast but great location Comfy beds (and extra pillow brought on request). Thought this hotel was fairly priced for the great location and quality of stay - no complaints!

Would use this hotel again!

Room Tip: Some rooms have little sunlight (a friends room) so ask for a room facing the road.

We have recently stayed at the Hotel Rex - four nights in a nice bedroom on the top floor with a balcony overlooking Gran Via. The breakfast buffet is fresh and plentiful. The staff are busy topping things up all the time. The room rate was very reasonable especially given the central location. If I had to give a down-side, it would be that it can be a little noisy at night being on Gran Via. Keep the windows closed and you'll be fine. Overall a lovely place to stay.

Old but very well located hotel.
The rooms are very spacious, comfortable bathroom.
Varied and abundant breakfast.
Very narrow elevator, do not fit luggage and people simultaneously.
It has no elevator to the entrance, so you have to take your bags up/down manually.
It does not have parking place, which is complex in Madrid´s downtown

It was the worst experience related to client service that I have ever experienced in a hotel. We came to the hotel after the long journey, at night. The lady in the reception was extremely rude and unfriendly. When we didn't want to leave our credit card with her and we wanted to pay everything in advance, she said that we cannot do it, because at the moment she is closing the daily accounting report. We were waiting in the reception for more than 45 minutes to get the key. When we asked for the form to make a formal complaint, she did not inform us correctly how to do it. The hotel manager that we talked later was also unfriendly and we even did not listen one "I am sorry for that situation" during all our stay there. The rooms are old, the breakfast is poor, the internet in the room almost did not work, and the only good point is the localization of the hotel - just in the centre of Madrid. The three stars status seems to be a joke in this case!

Room Tip: The rooms nest to the elevator are very noisy.

I had to book Rex in spite of very average reviews because it was the only exactable choice for New Year – 48 euro per night SNG BB.

Location is great – 2 minutes from metro, 5 minutes from Puerta Del Sol, 10 minutes to Plaza Mayor, plenty of shops and restaurants around.

Hotel is newer than I expected. Lobby is big and comfortable. There are free computers there and ice machine. But no bar and even water-snack machine was broken.

Single room is big enough. Clean and warm. Bad was comfortable. There is no mini bar and no kettle. It’s quite dark in room because all SNG are facing inside of building. Quiet but if you open the window you will hear air-conditioning from outside.

Breakfast was good – meat, cheese, tortillas, eggs, yogurt, fruits, cakes. Pity they don’t have vegetables, but I had pineapples and melon instead.

Stuff is very polite but they are not ready to help you. It looks that their only duty is to check in and out.

I felt very comfortable in the hotel and will stay there again in case the price will be good enough.

Room Tip: the higher - the better
