“In walking distance of everything”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

We stayed at Tryp Atocha from May 9th-May13th and had a very nice stay. Because is in the city which means it is in walking distance (not even necessary to use the metro) to everything it is noiser to sleep at night (bring a good set of ear plugs if you are sensitive to the street noises as I am). We had the corner room which was quite clean and spacious, the bathroom was wonderfully big for a European room with a nice tub for soaking in at the end of the day. You couldn't ask for more at their complimentary breakfast buffet, a nice way to start your day. Explore the small side streets behind the hotel to find hidden gems. I recommend buying all your drinks from the "alimentacion" because ordering drinks from restaurants or from the mini bar will cost you lots of Euros. Atocha was close to El prado, jardins de botanico, el parque de buen retiro (a must see), el mercado de san miguel, el plaza mayor and the palacio real. Really no no need to take the metro or the city tour buses. I would stay here again.

Hotel is within easy walking distance of Attocha railway station, Plaza Mayor, Prada Museum & Retiro Park. We had a comfortable clean room on the 4th floor. Our room was at the rear of the building & very quiet. The staff were polite & helpful. We did not eat in the hotel & there were many cafes, restaurants & bars nearby. The only niggle we had was queuing for check in. Only one member of staff on reception - although he did his best it was not the best start after a long journey. Despite this would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the building are quieter

Dear CF170209

Thank you very much for your opinion. The hotel is located as you mentioned, in the downtown, near the main tourisitc attractions (Museums Prado, Reina Sofia and Tyssen Bornesmiza 6-10 minutes walking, "Puerta del sol" 8 -10 minutes , "Plaza Mayor" 5-7 minutes, Royal Palace 8-10 minutes.

We try hard to improve our standards and try to offer always the best clean standard in our hotel. Regarding the staff is the heart of our hotel, whitout them we could not get the proper service. We love hearing that we were helpful and polite. Although this we will try to improve our performance looking at check in.

Thank you very much and best regards

The hotel offered a pleasant surprise. Given its current trip advisor position I had my doubts before arriving (it was recommended to me by the organizers of a business meeting). Turns out it has very friendly staff and my (premium) room was spotless, sufficiently large and did show any signs of aging. The bathroom was well stocked and fully adequate. Also the buffet breakfast was totally OK.

Perhaps on a tourist trip you may consider it slightly boring (there is not much special about it), but on the other hand, it is very conveniently located for tourism, and Madrid is not a city in which you want to spend a lot of time inside your hotel anyway. The Anton Martin metro station is right in front. Lots of good (and bad - just lots of) restaurants are in its direct vicinity. The main museums and other attractions are within a 15 minute walk.

I stayed in this city in much more expensive hotels before, and the conclusion is now that my overall experience of the city wasn't any better when staying in those.

I would definitely consider this again when returning to Madrid.

As well is in the middle of the 3 main museums in Spain (Prado 10 minutes, Reina Sofia 5 minutes, Tyssen Bornesmiza 7 minutes). We are very happy sharing our knowledge about the city, next time if you have time, please contact us to tell you some seecrets about the city and some places to visit (ask for our special routes in reception, made by our staf with heart ¡¡¡) for sure you will change the perception of the city.

We have spent a week in this hotel situated in a walking distance to Retiro and Prado and enjoyed ourselves immensely. (Judging by the map, we believed it would take us quite a lot of time to go to Plaza del Sol on foot, but it turned out to be 20 min max).
The buffet breakfast was abundant and always provided a great choice, no matter, if it was late or early morning. The personnel at the front office has always been really helpful and patiently answered all our questions.
The WiFi connection was quite good, the password is obtained at the front office.
Despite the fact that our windows were to the street, it posed no problems - there was no street noise heard unless we opened the windows. And to see the Madrid street in the window was much more interesting than some inner yard.
The only disadvantage we had during our stay - the safe in our room was not functioning, but we were told that we can leave our things in the front office safe, so it was not really a problem.
Definitely going to recommend this hotel to our friends!
Thank you very much for your work!!!

Dear Verasapeg:

Thank you very much for your opinion. The hotel is located just in the downtown, 5 minutes from "Plaza Santa Ana" ( lovely place to go for "tapas" :-) , the main museums (prado, tyssen and Reina Sofia Modern Art) and "el retiro" taht is the biggest park in the heart of the city. From the hotel it takes you between 8-10 minutes walking in a regular way or 20 if you are courious and stop to take photos ;-)

Our staff is focused in share the city with you, we are experts in the city (own the city is our philosofy of service and is focused in the tourist coming to Madrid to discover everything ¡¡¡)

We have been improving our wifi service since last year. We are happy that everything goes ok.

Regarding the safe and although you had the service, we have changed this kind of safes like the one you mentionede and will be installed in a few days. Next time you will not have the issue.

Thank you very much for your opinion, we are waiting your future visit to greet you again and share our city with you . Have a nice day ¡¡¡

I have just returned from four days at the Tryp Atocha hotel, I travelled with two of my children aged 15 and 4, (hubby was supposed to be coming too, but unexpected circumstances required him to stay in the UK and work).

My expectations were not overly high, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was given a family room on the ground floor just around the corner from reception. It had twin beds and a bunk bed, the bunk was long enough for my 15 year old who is about 5'5" tall. The beds were comfortable and the bed linen very clean, although I could have done with an extra pillow. The room had a TV, minibar, safe, hairdryer and ample storage space. The furnishings are functional rather than luxurious. The bathroom was very clean (although not well designed, in my opinion, as the clear glass shower screen swings out across the doorway and is easy to walk into) and there are complimentary toiletries and decent towels. My daughter informed me that the Wi-Fi was OK, maybe because we were near reception. I found the hotel room to be warm but not excessively so (and I am used to living in a freezing cold, stone built, draughty farm house in the UK). I did try putting the a/c on one night but it didn't seem to make any difference to the temperature in the room, so I expect that they haven't switched the a/c on yet as it is only April, although the weather was very warm in the daytime when we were there (25+ degrees C). We were able to open the window in our room and we weren't troubled by street noise because our room looked out over the back of the hotel. I can imagine that rooms at the front may be noisy because the street is a busy one, so if you want a quiet room the back of the hotel would be better.

The hotel serves a very nice buffet breakfast, pastries, croissants, churros, fruit, yoghurts, cheese, meat etc. Everything very fresh. The staff were all friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English and made us feel very welcome. Maybe we arrived at a quiet time, but we got checked in very quickly and efficiently.

This hotel is in a great location. 5 minutes walk (uphill) from Atocha railway station, the Anton Martin metro station right outside, Peurto del Sol 10 mins away, the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia art galleries close by, in fact all the main tourist sights are within easy walking distance. Loads and loads of bars and restaurants to choose from, shops and convenience stores right on the doorstep. We bought 72 hour Madrid Cards which were quite expensive at 65 euros each (full price for the 15 year old, free for the 4 year old) but definitely worth the money if you intend to visit the 3 main art galleries and the Royal Palace etc, because as well as including the entry fee, they allow you to jump the (extremely long) queues. These cards also allow you to jump the queues at the wax museum, the cable car and the Real Madrid stadium, and they include entry to most of Madrids tourist attractions.

I think this hotel offers very good value for money considering the standard of accommodation and central location. I paid £114 per night (on a pay up front non-refundable basis) for four people in a family room including breakfast, booked via Expedia. A taxi from the airport costs 30 euros and only takes about 20 minutes. When flying into Madrid, at passport control make sure you use the EU citizens lines (so long as you are an EU citizen!) as a modern day equivalent of the Spanish Inquisition appeared to be in operation at the 'All Passports' queues.

Overall, the TRYP Atocha hotel is an excellent base for exploring Madrid and I would be happy to recommend it.

Room Tip: The back of the hotel is likely to be quieter.
