Puerta de Alcala is near the Retiro park, and is a great monument to take pictures in front of. We got some great pictures in the night, after which we walked to Gran Via which is nearby.

It's the Fall of 2012 and i find myself in Madrid sitting at at table of a sidewalk cafe overlooking the majestic Alcala Gate enjoying a cold beer resting my sore feet after my visit to el Prado Museum and the Retiro Park some of the top neighboring attractions I had the time to visit..
I have been walking all over Madrid for the last couple of days, enjoying the food, watching the tourists and the natives go by.
Madrid is really a very unique city..I enjoy how the special spirit and accents of the madrilenos who make you feel right at home.
This is the city that has inspired so many artists and a great point of reference of world history.
La Puerta de Alcala and its surroundings make your visit worthwhile. It's located at the Independence Plaza on the east side of Madrid.. According to history, the gate was built in 1599 dedicated to Margarita de Austria, King Felipe lll's wife.

The original gate was demolished and an Italian architect, Francisco Sabatini, got the commission to build a more flamboyant one. It was officially inaugurated in 1778.
it stands on the middle of the Alcala street a gathering place for celebrations and demonstrations.
There are colorful parks and gardens nearby for your enjoyment.

There's a lot a traffic due mainly to the many businesses, shops and govermental offices in the area.
Its's a great place to appreciate the Spanish arquitecture in all is splendor either new or old..
There is a a famous song dedicated to the gate
Mirala !, Mirala:!, La Puerta de Alcala. Que bonita esta.
Look at it!, Look at it!: the Alcala's Gate. How beautiful it is.
