I really liked the zoo. It is big enough and is worth going to spend a day. It is located a little bit far from the centre, but you can go there by subway

Having been to some of the best zoos in Europe we are always a bit nervous of how the next one will fare! But we were not at all disappointed with Madrid's zoo.

Given the pollution in Madrid is not great the zoo is on the outer part of the city centre next to a large park and the zoo itself is full of greenery which is both a welcome change for the people and much more pleasant for the animals. It is definitely worth booking in advance online as you can get a better price. It is easy to get to on the metro and the signs are easy to follow to the zoo from the station.

The zoo is quite big and although we often spend between 3 and 4 hours in a zoo we spent longer here. The animals seem happy, healthy and are easy to see from outside the enclosures.

Madrid has got it right with the pandas who have great enclosures and there is plenty of room for people to view them from. MUCH better than the ones in Edinburgh where you only had 10 minutes to view them and the pandas are much more active (although the baby did stay asleep in a tree for our entire visit).

The food and drink is extremely expensive so it might be worth taking things with you if you can.

There are plenty of toilets which are well spaced throughout the zoo.

The zoo is outside of the city center, close to Casa de campo subway station. We really enjoyed the visit, because it was a nice and relaxing break from running between crowded museums and attractions.

I would suggest getting there earlier in the morning. They have shows with sea lions, dolphins, big birds and parrots. Each show is about 15-20 minutes long. In weekdays the shows start at 11 am and you can view all of them one after another. In weekends I think the starting time was 11.30 am. We enjoyed all the shows.

Be prepared with sun screen and hats as it gets really hot in Madrid. Water is really overpriced in the zoo, but you can bring your own bottle and fill it in the few fountains throughout the zoo. Food was not good either - very low quality and overpriced. At the time of our visit only one restaurant was working, so we had no other choice. We noticed that locals were bringing sandwiches and making picknicks on the green areas.

After lunch we continued with the visit, but it was getting warmer and most of the animals were making siesta, so we left soon. With the shows and lunch we spent about 3.5 hours and saw about 80% of all animals :) Overall I think it's good value for money if you like zoos.

Well, it was allright, but no more than that. Some criticism as well. The zoo has some nice expos like the one with the reptiles, but some animals have very little space (leopards) and it seems they cconsider entertainment more important than education. New childrens playground under construction might better be used to get some more space for the enimals. Furthermore chaining birds of prey between the so-called shows should be forbidden. Never saw a sorrier lot of birds than these. It is a shame !

Price great and visited during the week so we were often alone looking at the animals - peaceful walking around in the sunshine.

We have visited many, many zoo's and animal parks all over the world so feel confident that we have credible feedback to leave for this zoo. It was good to walk around, a pretty zoo and the public are well catered for but its heartbreaking to see huge play areas for kids being built whilst we visited this week yet some of the enclosures for the animals (in fact the majority!) were small, out-dated and in need of knocking down and rebuilding: the mountain goats and the baboons - both in 1960's designed concrete areas with no grass and no fauna. Most of the baboons infact were obviously suffering from some sort of skin problems and many looked red raw.

The larger animals especially: hippo's, rhino and some others were in tiny enclosures and this just wasn't right. This zoo could be a great zoo but why oh why spend so much money on upgrading and building kids play areas when you could be putting this money into the animals!

All this said, they must be doing something right as there were a lot of baby animals, and most seemed in good condition but they need more space!

The panda's were a delight and worth the entrance fee alone.
