“A welcomed break from the Big City”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

I decided to drag my mum along to the Zoo regardless of the mixed reviews on TA, as I am an avid zoo visitor!
The zoo is situated just outside the city with an easy 15 minute metro ride. Disembark at Case de Campo and it is a short 10-15 minute walk to the zoo which is signposted and easily reached.
It was 20 euros per adult for entry which was in hindsight excellent value for money!
The zoo is extremely big, and houses a huge variety of animals, many of which you do not find in Zoos in England. The enclosures were large and the animals seemed well fed and looked after. The enclosures were clean with plenty of vegetation and the animals, albeit a bit hot were happy to parade for the tourists, especially the ones with food!
There was a large variety of animals- Bears, elephants, giraffes, zebras, birds of prey, 6 types of monkey, dolphins, penguins, sea lions, lemurs, meerkats, the list is endless. There were many opportunities to watch shows, I recommend the sea lion show and the dolphin show is a must!
The Zoo grounds were well kept and the vegetation was green and well watered.
We took a packed lunch, as expected the prices in the food outlets was extortionate, so I'd recommend taking your own as there were plenty of places to eat.
We spent the best part of 6 hours here and was a welcomed break to the rat race in the city. I suggest you get there for 10-11am to avoid the queues. All the animals were out and visible and most were active, the only disappointment was that the gorillas were not out, otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable day.

“Habitats could be better”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

I agree with a previous reviewer regarding some of the habitats being a concrete jungle, the zoo has plenty of animals but the enclosures are not natural, particularly the baboons, mountain goats and black bears where it is just a concrete structure. The dolphin and sea lion shows are good but we preferred the science park at Faunia for a more natural surrounding for the animals. Both attractions are very expensive so visitors may need to make a choice between them. It's also a long walk from the nearest metro station through the Caso de Campo park.

“its worth it to go see the panda's and the dolphin show”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

i liked this zoo, compared to british zoo's it had so much more to see other than meerkats.

we got here mid-day and the place was really quiet, bought our tickets from the machine next to the turnstiles which was easy enough, walked round leisurely at our own pace, suddenly we found where everyone was, there was a dolphin show and the stand were packed, no wonder it was spectacular, other highlights were the panda's and the aquarium with a huge white shark swimming above your head.

you can easily spend all day here, the only downside was the food huts were all closed apart from the main cafe.

it was a pleasent day out so i would recommend it.

“Nice for a visit.”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

Try to be an early bird. Provided that, the place have some nice areas, e.g. the small building with sea life. The self-service locals inside the Zoo are kind of rough but they're good enough for a snack.
