I was told that anything that sounded that good in that area was a joke. Well, the joke was on the other person. It is that good. The staff is so accommodating with arrival times, storing things for us between Madrid and Marrakech, that not speaking Spanish was not a problem. Their website was not working properly, so I had to use Trip Advisor to get a confirmation. When I received an e-mail address that allowed me to communicate with them, the problem (getting a room with a toilet ensuite) was quickly cleared up. The only problem with this hotel is noise. If you need quiet, then maybe this location on Calle de Cervantes isn't for you, but we just ignore the noise. We live in a very peaceful area, so a few days in the city is not a big problem for us. In fact, one of our favorite hotels in Paris has the same problem. We just consider it "atmosphere." Another noise issue is a shared toilet whose door is in the hallway. Anyone who needs to use the toilet will be right outside your door. Once again, for the price and location, these are minor inconveniences for us. We discovered new cafes and restaurants every evening. Love this area!

Room Tip: You can walk everywhere from Plaza Mayor to the Prado; from Cibeles (bus from airport) to Atocha (tr...

Staff was really friendly and flexible! Location was good, really close to the Prado Museum and Parque del Retiro, and a short walk to Plaza Mayor. The neighbourhood was lovely, with narrow streets full of bars and cafés.

The only thing I'd point out is that the walls are paper thin, so if you're after privacy it's not the right place (there was a couple next door and I could hear them taking clearly).

We loved our five day stay at Hostal Jaen. It was in a perfect location mid-way between the centre of Puerta del Sol and the museum area (almost literally a straight walk to the Prado on the right and the Thyssen on the left once you reach the main road perpendicular to Calle Cervantes, a five minute walk). It is true that the owners do not speak English but we didn't really found that to be a problem. The owners were very nice and approachable, maybe just bring a pocket dictionary or downoad a Translator app on your phone, you'll be grand. Ring the 3rd floor when you arrive and they will buzz you in. Our room was moderately sized (bigger than I expected) and they cleaned and tidied up our room everyday, which was a welcome surprise. The only qualm I have is the noise- and this isn't even their fault entirely. This is towards another guest who thought it was not unconscionable to bang on his partner's bedroom door (I think they have two rooms, one of which was right across us) from 6.40 AM until 8 AM, repeating the words ("Please, let me in...Open the door, Liz...Please....bang... bang... bang...") At first we let it go, ignored it and tried to go to sleep. However, this went on for far too long that is acceptable (at one point, I thought the police were going to be called and find the woman in the room unconscious or something, seeing as she would not respond and/or let him in) and if it wasn't for our lack of desire to argue with an Englishman who seems to be in the midst of a personal/marital problem, we would have gone out and begged them to stop. Thinking about it just angers me, and I feel that it couldn't have been humanly possible for anyone in the house (ie. the owners who I believe also sleep in the hostal) not to hear the banging, scratching, clanging of the metal door knob repeatedly. Nothing was done. It really left a bad taste in our mouths but this is more to do with this couple and their horrendous behaviour. I would still go back to the hostal, don't get me wrong-- it was affordable, great location, good room size, but I kind of resent that we associate it with that experience now. Here's hoping other travellers do not encounter our neighbouring room's guests in the future (or at least for the owners to be a bit more assertive about these kind of guests).

Slap bang in the centre of the Barrio de Las Letras on a quiet little street in walking distance of some great bars, museums, cafes and attractions this place is clean, friendly, characterful with wonderful owners who treat you as guests in their home. Do not expect luxury or to speak English and you won't be disappointed. Surprisingly good value for such an excellent location - we loved it

Surprisingly nice rooms and it's a really great location. We stayed in a room with toilet and shower for half the price friends payed for a hotel down the road (and ours had a lot more character ;-). It even had a flatscreen TV and wifi, if you want to spend any time in the room rather than enjoying the nearby sites.

Would defo recommend hotel to anyone on a budget, 90 euros for two nights an absolute bargain. Room spotlessly clean and served purpose for just getting our heads down at night after a busy day sight seeing. Added bonus that hotel in great little neighbourhood with dozens of places to eat and drink.

Suprisingly lively rooms hidden away in a back street in a great location. Not hard to find and central to many of the tourist attractions. We stayed in two rooms, with and without toilet.. both were nicely decorated and clean. Great hidden gem in the middle of a big city.
