The Pearl of Asturias!! I almost hate to write this because I want to have a place to go to when I visit Madrid!! It's a bargain especially if your focus is a cheap, clean place to sleep. The rooms are on the spartan side but are simple and clean. Good neighborhood, right in the heart of Madrid.

Probably 150m from the Plaza Mayor, so very near the Puerta del Sol if you are into that mess. The hotel is clean and safe. The folks at the desk are more than hospitable. I believe they speak English as well. Rooms are straight forward - nothing fancy but clean and a flat screen TV that lets you switch over to English (or "V.O.") for films and TV programs. There is no elevator although they have one of those stairway lifts that goes up to the 1st floor. Charged fire extinguishers - Always nice to see!

There are ots of good, affordable bars and restaurants in the area. If this is not the Latina district, it is probably just a street or two away. Great, affordable, lively area, although we had no problem with noise, though our room was on the side street.

No parking but you can park at one of the underground public parking lots around the city for around 21€ per 24 hours. We parked in Principe Pio underground parking/metro stop which, as it turned out, was only 3 stops from the Sol metro stop (which is the closest to the hotel). If you like to shop, that might be a good place for you to leave your car. The parking is below a beautiful parking mall. If you want to park on the cheap, you can go outside the city and take a train in or park in long term parking out at Barajas. Probably not worth the time or trouble, though.

As I read was the case, management happily allowed us to leave our bags with them after we checked out as there were a few more places we wanted to visit before leaving Madrid on our final day. Perfect.

Room Tip: If you are afraid of noise, there are rooms off the side street, which is where we were.

Haha! Dark, narrow corridors, minuscule capsule rooms, facing a shaft-like backyard, all up some steep stairs in an old Madrid building. This is a far cry from carpeted floors and minibars. BUT you have got all you need; a comfortable bed, a stool and a bathroom with a little tub and a toilet. It´s kept spotlessly clean, everyone is friendly, it´s safe, the location near Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor couldn´t be better and it is VERY cheap. Spend your money on tapas, tinto de verano, cañas etc, and stay at the La Perla Asturiana.

Well located with a nice nostalgic feel: people should be more appreciative that there still are hotels like this. The staff were extremely helpful.

I stayed here for 2 nights and although the rooms are small, this place is fabulous in terms of location. Plaza Mayor is just a few steps away and I could explore it until late night knowing my room was just around the block. The staff are friendly and courteous and most importantly, they speak English. The place has free Wifi. The rooms are clean and cozy. I wouldn't be comfortable staying here for a longer period but for 2 nights it was perfect.

We stayed here in March 2004 and remembered the street noise from late-night revelers. Yet the convenience to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, the Prado, Reina Sofia, shops, restaurants, bars is so perfect that we returned. No elevator. Bring your own washcloth. Use ear plugs. Rooms are clean. Bathrooms are tiny, but en suite, which is nice. A shared shower/toilet/sink room is in the hall. We are bargain travelers, so the lack of fancy is fine. We like the price and convenient location.

Room Tip: Not sure there is truly a "quiet" room. Use ear plugs.

Great service! Small rooms but that's not surprising for a hostel. Excellent location. You can come and go 24h a day. The perfect choice for adventurers.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view to the street.

The best part about this hostel is its amazing location - it is literally around the corner from Plaza Mayor, and only a five-to-ten minute walk to Plaza del Sol. Both areas are extremely beautiful and are bustling with cafes, bars and restaurants. There is also a metro stop right in this area.

However, to balance out the great location, the hostel has a few flaws.\
La Perla Asturiana claims that its staff speaks English. Unfortunately, that is only about ten percent true. The staff operates on a need-to-communicate basis, meaning if they don't have to dig out their English skills, they won't.

The rooms are kept as clean as possible, which isn't saying much considering all of the furniture and bedding look as though they are extremely old. Still, all the necessities are there and the balcony, which allows you to step out into the fresh air, provides some form of satisfaction. Remember to bring your own toiletries.

There is a small computer located in the lobby where you can access the Internet for 1 Euro for 30 minutes.
