“If Lope de Vega could've lived here.”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

There was a saying that Spain's greatest playwright -- as great or better than Shakespeare wrote many plays. And his plays were so famous that people said, if it is a Lope play, it must be great!
Hostal Gonzalo is the excellent place to stay if you want to be close to the Prado, Huertas, and Santa Ana... heck let me throw in Sol and Plaza Mayor too for the price... but I digress. The hosts are great, Fernando and Javier are excellent and the staff will help you with any details. They will look after you, make recommendations and suggest walks if you would like to get advice and it is your first time. Free WiFi if you are those who can't live without being connected. But why would you do that when you are just a few stone throw away from 2 of the three great Museums of Art? El Prado is right there, and to the right Thyssen and further down, the Reyna Sofia... hello, it doesn't get any better than this and if you fancy good Galician food, walk up the hill, and have for breakfast Pan Tumaca at Cervantes Café with excellent coffee or perhaps you fancy lunch because you woke up late by being in all the Pubs on Huerta. So, head down to the best Galician kept secret, Maceiros... a wonderful treat at noon and better at night. Want some local flavor, Madrid style? Again, head out left from the Hostal and up and left again, and right at the end of the corner there is Restaurant Gonzalez... best rabo de toro (Bull's tail) or sample their Paella with a fine Rioja, Ramón Bilbao. Wlak right heading towards Paseo del Prado and their's VIPS, Starbucks, and a curious but awesome store (official distributer of Lladro porcelain).

So you see, you probably figured out that hostal Gonzalo is really centric in terms of metro, the train, and museums. Oh, yes the amenities. Strong powerful shower and spacious rooms, not a cramp hostal at all. Real towels, air conditioned, and yes TV's in the room... but why watch tv? Go out, you are in Madrid, the city that doesn't sleep.

I don't understand the short bed and one long pillow. If you have a mouth, you can ask for a another pillow, towel, sheets, etc., if you are seven feet tall, this is not the place for you... :-) I recommend it for couples who are on a budget or are cheap, for business for one person, for solo too. I stress that it is uber friendly. So give it a try. Just think about it. If you are near Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and Gran Vía, getting back will be downhill. If you are in Parque del Retiro, Atocha train station, and even want to get to the airport fast and cheap... walk across the street and hop on the 24/7 5 euro bus to the Airport. So, friendly, close, affordable, comfortable... and very secure in a nice neighborhood. Come to Gonzalo.

Room Tip: Ask for an interior room away from the main entrance door or front desk. Book early, it gets full fa...

We stayed here 1 night in September 2013 and returned for 4 nights in November. The hospitality was great and Javier speaks excellent English and was most helpful, with sightseeing and (nearby) tapas bar advice and arranged an early morning taxi to the airport. The location was excellent and an easy walk to the Atocha train station, major museums (Prada and Sofia Reina), Palace, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, etc. We highly recommend this Hostal and it majes a great base for exploring Madrid and nearby cities. Laundromat is just up the street and one of the best local streets for tapas (Calle Jesus Y Maria) is just around the corner.

We stayed 5 nights at Hostal Gonzalo from end Oct till early Nov 2013. There were five of us and we took up two rooms
The rooms were very clean and came with attached bath, shower and toilet. Hot water was available for showering. The furnishing was very basic. Hair dryer is available upon request (no charge), and as with the room, it is a basic hair dryer. There was no kettle to boil water.

The hostal is about 20mins walk from Atocha train station. It was our first time to Madrid and we had trouble locating the Calle Cervantes initially. We arrived about 9pm, and it didn't help that the road signs were hard to read at night. With the luggages in tow, it would have been better to take a cab from Atocha, which will cost abt €7.

We were received by an employee who works the night shift. We met Javier and Antonio the next day and they were very helpful in recommending places for breakfast and there were a few good ones nearby (read my other reviews). Indeed, they were the stars at hostal Gonzalo. My 73yo mum fell prey to pickpocket on our 3rd day in Madrid and Javier was sympathetic and gave us directions to the policia nearby. His empathy alleviated our distress.

The location of Hostal Gonzalo is excellent. On our last day in Madrid, we were able to revisit Retiro Park to take more pics and also managed to visit Museo del Prado for a good two hours plus. We took the1540hrs train from Atocha to Valencia.

All in, this location is good value for accommodation in Madrid.

Pluses: location, cleanness, staff, free Wi-Fi.
Minuses: room size, no fan, no hairdryer, no shampoo, no fridge, short bed, one long pillow for 2 people.
Overall it was nice stay and nice people at Gonzalo. I would recommend it.

Excellent location and neighborhood. Clean and Quiet. The recommended Tapa Bar area is just around the corner. There is a laundry at the end of the block (ask Javier). Self service or drop off. We took advantage of both because this was in the middle of our 3 week trip. Our room was in the front facing the street. Cute tiny balcony to look out on the local street scene. Double door/window closure from balcony to room kept it quiet at night. Looking out each morning I felt like a local. Would definitely stay here again.

We have made Hostel Gonzalo home on our annual visits to Spain. Rooms are clean and quiet, and quiet isn't always easy to find if you're looking for a good night's sleep.
The location couldn't be better if you want to visit the great art museums and some of Madrid's most famous tapa bars are minutes away. Host Javier speaks good English for those who don't speak Spanish and takes care of your every need. A good choice for the price.

Room Tip: Most rooms don't face the street, a good choice if you want a good sleep.

Lovely small, family owned hostal (not a hostel). Very clean, owners very helpful. We dealt primarily with Javier and his mother, both exceptionally helpful and friendly.

Excellent location just two blocks from Paseo del Prado - very walkable to Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum (where the stunning Guernica lives!) and more, bus, metro, taxis.

If we ever get back to Madrid, this is where we will stay!!!! Thank you Javier!!!!!!
