There was a saying that Spain's greatest playwright -- as great or better than Shakespeare wrote many plays. And his plays were so famous that people said, if it is a Lope play, it must be great!
Hostal Gonzalo is the excellent place to stay if you want to be close to the Prado, Huertas, and Santa Ana... heck let me throw in Sol and Plaza Mayor too for the price... but I digress. The hosts are great, Fernando and Javier are excellent and the staff will help you with any details. They will look after you, make recommendations and suggest walks if you would like to get advice and it is your first time. Free WiFi if you are those who can't live without being connected. But why would you do that when you are just a few stone throw away from 2 of the three great Museums of Art? El Prado is right there, and to the right Thyssen and further down, the Reyna Sofia... hello, it doesn't get any better than this and if you fancy good Galician food, walk up the hill, and have for breakfast Pan Tumaca at Cervantes Café with excellent coffee or perhaps you fancy lunch because you woke up late by being in all the Pubs on Huerta. So, head down to the best Galician kept secret, Maceiros... a wonderful treat at noon and better at night. Want some local flavor, Madrid style? Again, head out left from the Hostal and up and left again, and right at the end of the corner there is Restaurant Gonzalez... best rabo de toro (Bull's tail) or sample their Paella with a fine Rioja, Ramón Bilbao. Wlak right heading towards Paseo del Prado and their's VIPS, Starbucks, and a curious but awesome store (official distributer of Lladro porcelain).
So you see, you probably figured out that hostal Gonzalo is really centric in terms of metro, the train, and museums. Oh, yes the amenities. Strong powerful shower and spacious rooms, not a cramp hostal at all. Real towels, air conditioned, and yes TV's in the room... but why watch tv? Go out, you are in Madrid, the city that doesn't sleep.
I don't understand the short bed and one long pillow. If you have a mouth, you can ask for a another pillow, towel, sheets, etc., if you are seven feet tall, this is not the place for you... :-) I recommend it for couples who are on a budget or are cheap, for business for one person, for solo too. I stress that it is uber friendly. So give it a try. Just think about it. If you are near Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and Gran Vía, getting back will be downhill. If you are in Parque del Retiro, Atocha train station, and even want to get to the airport fast and cheap... walk across the street and hop on the 24/7 5 euro bus to the Airport. So, friendly, close, affordable, comfortable... and very secure in a nice neighborhood. Come to Gonzalo.
