“A little Gem in Madrid - revisited”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

This is the second time I have been to the Hostal Gonzalo. This time we (a friend of mine and me) only for one night on a travel stop in Madrid. We arrived early evening and left very early morning. Like already written in my first review, this is a wonderful little place in a great neighborhood of Madrid - easy to reach from and to the airport (we took the bus to Cibeles and walked 10 minutes). It's clean, efficient and I asked Javier the owner for a room with seperate beds. All was perfect. I would not go anywhere else in Madrid.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights and had a wonderful experience. This is a family-run business and the family/staff are very friendly, efficient, and helpful. The rooms are lovely, quiet, modern, and clean. The location is just minutes away from the major museums and sights. The surrounding area is full of nice restaurants, ships, tapas bars, and atmosphere. Both Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega lived on this street. I highly recommend it.

Quite in the centre of Madrid, nevertheless quiet. Room, beds, toilet were clean and the hosts very friendly and helpful. Sometimes a problem: The old-style elevator does not come, when people on other floors forgot to shut both doors. But this helps to some exercise on the staircase.

Room Tip: Our room on the street-side was quite, especially when the double-shield window-doors were closed.

We read the reviews and wondered if it was going to be as good as expected... and it was. Spotlessly clean, warm rooms and bathrooms. Simple, but great value. Very helpful people running the place. Great location for seeing the sights of Madrid, all within walking distance. Highly recommended.

For simple, budget accommodations this place is great! I was impressed with the obviously high standards for cleanliness here. Rooms are simply furnished (bed, desk and armoire) but are spotless. Floor is obviously mopped. Windows (at least on interior rooms facing courtyard) are frosted for privacy and easy to open (note, no screens). Bathroom is hospital-grade clean. Towels smell like Downey. No traces of mold on tile or shower curtain. The toilet, sink, bidet and tub sparkle. Zero water spots on mirror. Shower head is clean and delivers a nice strong shower. They supply a small bar of soap but no shampoo/conditioner so plan accordingly. If you aren't used to city living (i.e. NYC) you may surprised at how thin the walls are. Javier, the owner, is a hands-on operator and it shows. The hostal is located on the 3rd floor of a walk-up building, so be prepared to climb the beautifully polished wooden stairwell (good for you after eating all those tapas) and leave your big suitcases at home (by American standards, the elevator is the size of a hall closet).

Room Tip: Rooms facing courtyard are quieter.

The place is quite and near to all important thing of Madrid by foot! Prado, Reina Sofia, Retiro, Atocha Station, Plaza Mayor is really near. You have many thing near by... from restaurants to souvenir shops and supermarket! The only negative is that its on the third floor and you have to wait for the elevator. Javier, the guy at the reception is very friendly and he would help you with everything! Also the bath is nice and clean! Its a nice cheap place to stay for the night during your visit.

We had been recommended this hostal by a friend who had returned several times to the same place and were not disappointed. Travelling with our 14year old daughter it was the perfect location to show her the sights and atmosphere of Madrid. The hostal is clean, warm with friendly staff who went out of their way to help us with any queries. Nearby are many cafes and restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes for any meal. We spent 4 nights at Hostal Gonzalo.
