“Better than expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

After reading recent reviews on tripadvisor I was a little worried about what to expect at this hotel. I was relieved when entering our rooms there was wooden flooring and firm matresses. We obviously benefited from the updated rooms, the carpet in the hallway had seen better days but other than that hotel was beautiful. We were allowed in our rooms earlier than the allotted time, the staff were courteous and always available. The breakfast buffet was extensive and fresh. The metro is literally just outside the hotel, but we spent the first two days on the tourist buses to get an idea of the city, the stop is about 3 minutes walk from the hotel. I cannot fault the hotel.

Room Tip: We were on fourth floor as were our friends, both rooms fine.

The standard rooms in this hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade and it is over priced for its condition. You have to pay extra to use the swimming pool. The room service staff do not speak English. The hotel is 10 minutes drive north of Madrid City Center and is right on the Metro line. The Metro is the only good thing about this hotel. There are no convenience stores or restaurants near by. Madrid Hard Rock Cafe is a good 20 walk from the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on north or east of the building otherwise you will get a room with view of ugly brick...

Good location, if you want to go to a football game of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, between the stadion and downtown. The room we had was quite dark and small (to the courtyard), but at least quiet. Bathroom is small, too. The only thing that gets hot with the hairdryer is your hand..! The garden looks nice, but opens only in summertime. Fitnessroom is ok, but they charge hotelguests 20 Euro to use the pool / spa!

Room Tip: Rooms to the garden or to the front have more light. (Frontrooms might be noisy.)

Apparently the hotel is undergoing renovations but the lobby and my room may not have been done yet as they still look dated and tired. The room was not large, a fair bit of space being taken up by the entrance alcove. There’s a trouser press, big wardrobe, an LCD TV but the in room safe was out of order. The bathroom with twin wash basins was quite alright except for the lack of hanging space. A couple of towel rails would be useful. The mattress sags a bit which would not be good for guests with back problems.

The breakfast buffet was quite adequate but not a lot of variety on offer. Staff appears busy but doesn’t seem to be productive. Those at the reception counter were the same and not particularly friendly too.

There is a bank and ATM across the street. Also the metro station “Gregorio Maranon” is just round the corner.

Dear Guest,

We want to thank you for taking time in posting a review of your stay in the Occidental Miguel Ángel Hotel.
As you said, we are updating the rooms and the matresses are also being changed. Do not hesitate to contact us next time you make a reservation in the Hotel in order to ask for an updated room different than the last one you had. You can also try the ones to the garden or Castellana. Even the ones facing to the court are very quiet.
We hope your needs can be satifified nex time you visit us in Madrid.

Your faithfully,

We were checking out at 6:40 in the morning and decided to stop by at the executive floor for a coffee despite the fact they opened at 7am. We got to the executive floor, the buffet was ready, so decided to start with an orange juice. A waiter showed up, told us they would open in 20 minutes and asked us to leave and order Room Service. We were on our way to the airport and could not go back to our rooms and order room service. We left without our coffee, went downstairs to the lobby to check out and mentioned the story. To our surprise, there was no reaction, no apologies. The hotel lost 2 business people and didn't seem to care!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review about your stay in the Hotel.
We are sorry about the incident that you had with the Breakfast in the Executive floor. The times for the Executive Breakfast is 7.30-11 hrs, so we are sorry if you could not have breakfast as early as you needed.
The Buffet is prepared before the opening so that is why you could find everything ready. We are sorry about the inconvenience with the waiter.

Our room service is open 24 hours so we recomend you to order breakfast in your room next time if you need to have brekafast before our Restaurants open.

Yours faithfully,

This hotel (and Madrid's accreditation authorities) are kidding themselves if they think this is five star. Dated and tired is the word with perhaps the worst beds I have ever slept in - sagging mattresses no support, old, it's a disgrace the hotel thinks that this is acceptable. The rooms are big but our looks out onto a brick wall - nice. Service average. I emailed the reservations team before arriving and communication was poor. The only plus point is that it's near the metro. I am certainly not precious or impossibly demanding, in fact faded grandeur is often my thing. But this hotel scores poorly on most key points and I would not stay here again. Book at your peril!

Dear guest.
Thank you for your review posted in Tripadvisor.
We want to inform you that all our rooms do not face to the inside court. We have most of them facing to the Castellana Street or the Garden. You can make a request of your preference and we always do our best to satisfy our client's wishes.
The reservations department used to answer every e-mail no later than 24 hours so we are sorry if you get an answer after that.
We hope that if you consider our Hotel for a future stay you can enjoy one of the renewed rooms.
Yours faithfully,

I travel internationally for business and have used TripAdvisor for the past several years to make my decisions on where--and where not to--stay. This is the first review I've written and I'm writing it because I hope that 1.) fellow travelers will take heed and 2.) this hotel might change some of its practices.

I'd read on TripAdvisor that the hotel had seen better days but that it was in the process of a gradual renovation and upgrading of rooms. When I arrived at the hotel, I inquired about this and was told resolutely by the receptionist that all of the rooms were of the same quality, carpeted but newly painted. She flatly refused to acknowledge that some rooms might have been upgraded more than others in the same price range. Moreover, she was curt and pointedly dismissive.

After spending two nights in a room with carpeting from 1970s so threadbare that the flooring underneath the carpeting is visible, with furniture that wouldn't sell in a thrift store, and a bathtub with a shower curtain from a 99 cent store, I happened to glance into another room on my floor as the housekeeper cleaned it. (I won't go into more details about my room, but you can read all of the prior posts with complaints about the worn down rooms and now assume they're accurate.)

Wouldn't you know, the room had newly installed wooden flooring and mint condition furniture. I asked the housekeeper if this room was particularly special and she reported that many rooms on each floor were upgraded to this degree, from single bed rooms to executive suites.

I'm checking out today and checking into the Intercontinental Hotel, a block away. For $17 American dollars more than my room at the Miguel Angel I will stay in a room infinitely more comfortable and modern. But most of all, I will be the recipient of service that is honest and cordial.

Dear Guest,

First of all, we want to thank you for posting your review in Tripadvisor.

Regarding your review and as you mentioned, the Hotel is in the process of a gradual renovation. That is why when the Hotel has a very high occupancy not all our guest can enjoy one of the updated rooms.

You could check that our rooms are being changed with new wooden floor, painted and new furniture. We expect to have most of them updated by summer so we hope you consider our Hotel again for a future stay in Madrid.

Do not hesitate to contact us to tell us you are coming. We will accomodate you in one of the updated rooms for you to change your mind about the Hotel.

Thank you again for your comments.
Yours faithfully.
