This hotel is in an excellent location. It really isn't that far to walk to the main attractions at all and the many bars and restaurants in the pretty streets and squares. We didn't use the Metro but it is close to a stop for that. We took a taxi from the airport which was expensive but we knew that in advance.

Part of the hotel is on a pedestrianized street. This street is certainly busy during the day and of course at night but we rarely heard anything through the window even though we were close to street level. Check-in was smooth and efficient and we had no issues. Hotel lobby is kept clean with modern touches of furniture. To the right is the Café and outside on the street is the Terrace for the Café and restaurant.

The superior double rooms are actually not a bad size by European City standards and we were pleasantly surprised. The room, and corridors, on the side facing the pedestrian zone are different than the other side. Ask for a room this side and pay a small amount extra. Muted grey tones, flat screen television, free mini bar (not masses in it but handy nonetheless), free Wi-Fi (no issues for us, worked perfectly) and possibly the best set of black out curtains ever experienced! Good sized bed but rock hard mattress. Not great for us, but depends what you like personally. Plenty of wardrobe space. Air conditioning in this part of the building worked very well. If you want an iron board and iron you have to ask for one. The iron board is a table top one!

We did have noise issues from the people in the next door room, and strangely what we could hear was them using the taps in their bathroom. No doubt about it, slightly annoying, so we were fortunate they seemed to want to go bed late and wake up late. I would imagine each room is configured differently so maybe in a lot of them you just do not get this.

Our room rate did not cover breakfast. We did eat outside on the Terrace twice. Once in the restaurant part of the Terrace where the food was expensive, but extremely good. The fish was beautifully cooked and the portions were enormous. We had lunch outside but in the Tapas/Café part one day. Staff were efficient and not overbearing.

Everything is within reach, including supermarkets, the stop for the tourist bus and the famous Corral de la Moreria show is easily walkable (and is highly recommended). Plaza Mayor is easily reached for a night out and the surrounding small squares and streets do lovely breakfast options.

The bathroom was actually very spacious with a lovely walk in shower, good quality toiletries and nice touches of free toothbrushes/sewing kit/etc. Personally we loathed the glass door to the bathroom as there was no modesty panel. It might have looked funky and interesting on the drawing board but in practice it wasn't our thing at all. Not to put to fine a point on it, if one of us wished to use the toilet and the other had gone out of the room, on returning they would have been faced (literally) on opening the bedroom door to the other person using the toilet. Call us old fashioned if you like but really! I am not sure why they couldn't put a modesty panel on the door!

The other issue (which nobody else seems to have encountered) is that the light switches all have an almost neon blue glow around them. It nearly drove us demented and each night we had to go around the entire room and somehow cover the stupid things up. You get a lovely quiet room...blackout curtains that are amazing..and yet you are left with blue strips of light shining out all night.

So, some very small issues which obviously won't affect everybody but one must cover everything in the review! That aside, in the price bracket and what you get for that you will not find a better high quality hotel in Madrid in such a great location quite frankly. We would return, but I think we would save up as looking up from street level to the top of the hotel you can see what a beautiful outside space it looks if you have booked a room right at the top...

What made me choose this hotel was its TripAdvisor rating, and I certainly made the right choice.

LOCATION

-METRO - Callao (easy and accessible)
-Walking distance to Sol, and Gran Via. (Shopping haven)
-Filled with restaurants, fast food, cheap food fares (the street further down left from Preciados)

CHECKING-IN

Our check-in was delayed for about 6 hours (due to Ryainair, and congested city-traffic), we arrived in the evening (7 to 8PM), the taxi dropped us off the Callao Metro (which is very close), and we walked from there. A bustling area with lots of people. One of the hotel staffs saw us approaching with our luggages and quickly came over to help us and showed us in. The female receptionist was very accomodating, and despite our late arrival we did not experience any problem with our reservation and was given a very nice room. Our luggages were brought to our room and we were taught how to use the safe etc and if we needed anything else.

ROOMS

The rooms were very modern, wide, spacious, and clean. The mini-bar was well-stocked, free, and replenished daily. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable as well.

INTERNET

Wifi was free, and efficient.

VIEW

We did not get much of a view from our room, we had a little balcony that looked out to the side street, and there was a shop below us.

SERVICE

The night before our scheduled flight home we were concerned about going over the weight-limit of 23kg, so we called and asked if they could have it weighed for us. (someone mentioned condescending, the male staff during this shift -- not so friendly) We brought our luggages down after the call. We were told to leave it there and that someone will bring it up to our room later.

Other than that, service was otherwise exemplary (day shift).

We were flying KLM and checked-in online to avoid the long lines. However there were documents we needed to print, boarding passes -- the hotel kindly offered to print it for us.

They also arranged our airport transfer, called a taxi for us, and when we were about to leave, one of the female receptionists insisted on helping us with our luggages (seeing as we had a lot of bags with us).

OVERALL

I highly recommend; If you're willing to shell out some extra money (a llittle expensive-we stayed during the Christmas holidays), Preciados will definitely ensure you have a pleasant stay in Madrid.

This was a good hotel with good value. It is right in the heart of Plaza de Espana so it can get loud, though the windows did a decent job of limiting the noise. Close to shopping and the Puerta Del Sol.

Like much of Madrid, it was good, not great.

Very nice room, a jr suite, and a great view in a central location made extra special by the hotel staff. The front desk was helpful and the door man carried our bags to the room, showed us how to work the safe, the room key, etc. The staff of the restaurant were nothing but wonderful and friendly. For our first of 4 cities in Spain, we couldn't have asked for a better experience.

This hotel is in an excellent location for sightseeing. It is within walking distance of the major museums and other sights. It is also very close to the metro that allows you go a bit further afield. The rooms are spacious, especially by European standards and modern. Free wifi is available, and upgrading, at nominal cost, to a superior room gets you a room on the upper floors that is a bit bigger and has a skylight in the bathroom. The staff kept the room immaculate. I would have given the hotel 5 stars except the staff at the front desk, while pleasant, were unable to provide the services of a concierge. They tended to "push" a particular flamenco show and were unwilling to help with train reservations.

Room Tip: Get a superior room on the top floor, it will provide you with a sky light in the bathroom and a bal...

Choose this hotel based on other reviews here and wasn't disappointed. The location is central to everything a tourist might wish to see within walking distance, if you like a bit of walking. It's on a street closed to traffic except for the early hours of the morning for deliveries. After than the cafes/restaurants move the tables and chairs out and it creates a nice atmosphere.

My room wasn't the standard shaped hotel room and was a pleasant change. The shower was huge. It faced an internet light well which was the only drawback as I couldn't see outside. The positive was it was on the ground floor so no need to wait for the lift or use the stairs.

The staff were friendly and all spoke English which helped. It appears to be a busy hotel as there were always people checking in and out. This is probably because of the reasonable price for the location and hotel amenities. Internet and minibar is included. Fridge could be a tad cooler. The internet is fine for emails, however, it seems to hang on websites that required a bit more speed, eg Facebook, Google Maps. This wasn't just in the room, also out in reception. It wouldn't stop me from staying there again.

If catching a taxi, ask to be dropped off at the Santo Domingo end, otherwise you have a bit of a walk because as mentioned, the street is closed to traffic.
