We booked Hotel Liabeny based on Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. The hotel is clean and well-appointed and in a great central location. The directions on the website are concise and we had no problem getting ourselves there from the airport, by public transport. The beds were very comfortable, there was plenty of light and space in the bathroom, along with a superb rain shower, and we had a large wardrobe and mini bar/fridge. The breakfast buffet is huge and varied and the restaurant itself is bright and airy. The staff we dealt with were all polite, friendly and willing to help. On the downside, the room was quite warm and the air conditioning appeared to be off for the winter, although the heating worked well. Opening the window helped cool things down, but it was too noisy outside to keep open at night. There was only 1 pillow per bed and I would have preferred another - I'm sure I could have requested one, but I didn't bother for a short stay. We didn't get much chance to try any of the other facilities during our short break, but I would definitely recommend and stay there again.

3.5 stars

The best thing about this hotel is the rate offered for the location and quality of the hotel. All in all, it was decent for a major city at the rate we paid. If you’re looking for a good place to sleep at a nice price, this is it. However, if you’re looking for a 4 star hotel, then I suggest looking elsewhere. This hotel may technically be a 4 star, but it felt more like a 3 star.

Location -- the location is good, as other reviews indicate. It is very central. You’re close to two major metro stops (Sol and Gran Via). You can walk plenty of places. However, having stayed in Madrid, I personally would consider staying in a different location. When you walk just a minute or so south of the hotel you’re immersed in an incredibly touristy, chaotic, crowded area. To me this felt a little like staying in Times Square or something. Knowing what I know now, I would stay somewhere else central, but slightly less touristy. The metro is good, so you can easily get wherever quickly. If you do stay at the hotel, note that the areas directly to the north of the Gran Via are much less touristy.

Staff -- front-desk staff was helpful, though not exceedingly friendly. The bellboys were very friendly.

Wifi -- wifi was fairly slow, but not awful. You needed a specific code for each device, but the nice thing was that the code worked for the entire stay rather than having to get a new code every day.

Rooms:

This is where I was the most disappointed. While the lobby has somewhat old fashioned decor, the rooms feel old in a bad way. Not old as in charming, but old as in very dated. The brown color scheme doesn’t help. The bathroom in particular felt old.

Despite being a non-smoking room the first room we were given smelled overwhelming of smoke, so much that we opened the windows to try and air it out. It must have been a smoking room for many years. We asked to be switched and were quickly given another room that didn’t smell like smoke.

Air conditioning didn’t seem to work. I don’t know if it is just because it had reached a time in the year when it was fairly cold outside and the hotel had turned off the air conditioning for the hotel. This is too bad. It might have been chilly outside at night, but the rooms were stuffy. Opening the window quickly cooled the room down, but also allowed in outside noise, so that wasn’t a good option.

Also disappointing were the pillows. They were uncomfortable and flat. We found a few more in the closet, which slightly improved the situation.

Noise was actually fine, as long as the windows were closed. Despite being on the street side the windows did a good job at blocking out the noise.

This hotel has nice lobby and bar areas, good wifi and front desk staff were great. The location made it easy to walk everywhere. However, we could not get the room to a comfortable temp for sleeping at night. We were told to"open the window" for an hour and somehow that would fix it (?). This would be fine except at night it is in a fairly noisy area--all night long. The windows are well soundproofed, but not when they're open! We did request help after the first night but if anything was done, it wasn't evident. Also the pillows were super flat and beds pretty hard. No need to have breakfast at hotel because there are plenty of cafés a short walk away. The location and public areas were excellent.

location, location, location. Staying in this lovely hotel means that you are in the center of Madrid. You don't need the public transportation. All the main attractions are 5-20 min walkings. The main stores and many good resturants are near the hotel. But not only the location. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was very clean. When will be back in Madrid we'll stay again in Liabeny Hotel

Our first visit to Madrid and the Hotel Liabeny contributed to a great stay. Well situated for all the major sights but pleasantly quiet in a little square off the main street. The staff were very helpful and the room was spotless and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice with fresh fruit, cereals, an array of pastries and a choice of hot dishes. The public rooms were comfortable and we were able to leave our bags until the evening flight. We would certainly stay there again.

Spent four nights recently and we were treated well by the staff, who were courteous and helpful. Tried to buy stamps for postcards to UK, none available on third evening at the weekend, but the following evening, stamps were produced and our cards were taken for the post. We enjoyed the breakfast with its continental style, not a hugely extensive variety of fare, but adequate. The room was clean and we had fresh sheets and pillow cases every night. Downsides were the smell of smoke in the room, which seemed worse when the aircon. was switched on and some noise at night, there is a night club nearby. Good central location, but the debris of the night before can be a bit unpleasant, we were warned by a rough looking character to avoid the vomit on the pavement!

Room Tip: Try for an inside room and preferrably well above street level.

My sister and I stayed at Hotel Liabeny for 2 nights during our stay in Madrid. We were very satisfied with our stay. The location was convenient as we walked everywhere. Never needed a cab nor did we use the metro. Bed was very comfortable and the room was adequate size for two people. Had an issue with the shower but they were quick to answer our call and make repairs. Loved the free Wifi! We didn't eat at the restaurant or use room service so can't comment on it. I used the gym one day and it was average. It wasn't as cold as I prefer when working out but it did the job. All in all, I would stay there again. As a side note, what I found during my 2 week trip in Europe is that they don't use wash towels in the hotels so make sure you travel with one or with a loofah.
