“As Spaniards will say, hotel super guay”
Reviewed March 26, 2012

The liabenys is a very "cool" / nice place to stay at Madrid (as Spaniards say, it was super "guay"). Great location (almost at Plaza del Sol in the geographical center of the city), excellent service, and very reasonable prices for a 4-star hotel. Defintely, I will stay there again when I return to Madrid. Love it.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the street are quieter.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel for four nights. As other guests have said, the location is excellent, close to Puerta del Sol, Gran Via, close to Metro Stations, also close to many restaurants, bars, cafetarias and Spain's biggest departments store. The Conceirge services were great, very helpful in planning our days out exploring Madrid; also made sure we got on a taxi at 4 am to catch our flight. So thank you to everyone at Liabeny

Take it as read - this hotel is well located as everyone states. We used the yellow airport express bus to travel to Cibeles, a bargain at 2 euros. From Cibeles! even with cases, the hotel is only 10 minutes walk via Gran Via.

With regards to my review I want to be objective and not let the location colour things. I took my family and we had three rooms on the sixth floor. Each room was a "double" with the twin beds pushed together. The beds were very hard as was the single thin pillow. After the first night we secured another pillow from the maid that improved things slightly. The room was tired and dated with lots of dark wood and drab furnishings. The bathroom was also in need of a refurb, the sink was cracked and tiling around the bath was stained with mould. Although the weather was warm there was no air conditioning which meant the room was stuffy. To alleviate this we opened the window but even at 4.30 am the surrounding streets are very noisy.

We declined the hall porters services on arrival as our cases were spinners and we could easily take them to our rooms. I wonder whether this was the reason for the frostiness of the four or five staff that staffed the reception and lobby. There unfriendliness made it unpleasant to walk through the lobby.

We had breakfast one morning during our three night stay. The buffet choices were good and the food of good quality, the orange juice was poor. The staff were slow to offer tea or coffee and were equally slow at clearing away. For the other mornings we felt that 90 euros for breakfast was a bit excessive (we were a party of 6) so we had a far cheaper breakfast sat in the sun in a restaurant in Plaza Mayor with a far better view.

Overall then this hotel was fair value but not necessarily what you might expect of a city centre 4 star.

Booked our hotel/flights via expedia and used TrpAdv to check before paying.

Most of the reviews are pretty on. The hotel is in the perfect location.

Location (the best part on the slight downhill): Right in the heart of Madrid. You probably could not find better. You can walk to everything. For those of you late 20's/30's you will love the proximity to the hip area Malasana. I will review a bunch of the places we checked out there. If you want to take day trips, the Puerta del Sol station is right under the square. So close!

Check In/Service (Very Bad): Girl at the front desk was a little snippy and not at all helpful. She took our passports and told us the room number. We are a couple and booked non smoking. When we opened the door on the 4th floor - ash tray and two twin beds. It 'stunk' in both senses. ;). So we go back down, ask for the proper room and a 'bed'. I don't understand common sense mistakes like this in the hotel industry. She was not at all friendly nor apologetic. These are easy fixes and good hotels know its not good treatment and most people have been travelling for many many hours to get here! lol (like us). The bellmen are overly friendly when you arrive and insist on taking your luggage and likely make a living off the tips. I'm fully capable so dont like the forcefulness of that (no way out of having them do this). Mind you, they are nice so hey, c'est la vie.

Also, you would think she would give us the wifi code at check in? We had to go down and ask as well. Perhaps other desk staff are better and we lucked out with BRUTAL.

Rooms (eek): I guess its European standards, but it certainly did not seem 4 star. Very old and outdated. The carpet and furniture was a little icky. However, we lived with it as we spend our days exploring the city. The beds are hard, and you will likely need to ask for an extra pillow as they are weak. Service wise, they enter the room a lot to do the sheets, turndown the bed etc. So that was nice. Also somes with some toiletries. Note to girls out there: You will need your own conditioner. ;) Also, the noise others write about is true if you keep the window open. In March, it was too stuffy in the room (AC not on yet in hotel apparently) so we wanted it open. Here is where you hear the late night life of madrid. After two nights we got used to the noise. Window shut - very minimal, so hopefully for you summer guests its not an issue.

Gym: did the job. Had water and decent equipment. No window. Also, the sauna they advertise has a sign 'let the staff know if you want to use it one hour before'. Makes sense, saves money, but meant we never tried it.

Resto: Didn't try, can't comment. Likely MUCH better out there.

Taxi: We paid about 16 Euro from the airport and about 28 going back. There was the extra charge going back for taxis and maybe he took us for a spin. That or the other terminal is farther. Either way just wanted to give you an idea of cost. Both times, no traffic except for a little downtown Madrid.

Other: You can lend an electrical adaptor from the desk for a deposit. Wifi is free, but you have to enter an annoying code every time you connect. That resto near the hotel is NOT WORTH IT. The one everyone mentions in the reviews called Garbo. I had the veg lasagna and my BF the pizza. The lasagna was not even made with noodles, no idea what that was, and the pizza bland. Service ify. For the price not worth it. Also, they charge 10% extra on the terrace. Be adventures and keep going up the street into Malasana -- some AMAZING fun tapas places with WAY better prices.

Summary: if the price is right for you, then the location is right. No bells/whistles but does the trick if you got this hotel on a deal.

Room Tip: 4th floor has smoking rooms. Be sure to tell them AGAIN at check-in, as they ignored our booking req...

When a five minute walk will take you to the Puerto del Sol, ten minutes to Plaza Mayor and just twenty minutes to the Prado and Reina Sofia, your hotel is the perfect location in Madrid. The Liabeny is tucked into a small side street that taxi drivers have to use GPS to find but is so near everything you came to Madrid to see that it is a hidden gem.
Rooms were standard European-small but clean and in good condition. Hotel staff were pleasantand helpful - in fact, the first room we were shown was on the fifth floor and further from the street noise (as per my request thanks to other Trip Advisor reviewers!) but had a small window looking at a wall a couple of yards away, so we returned to the registration desk and asked if they had something with a bit of a view. They were very accommodating to find us a room looking out on the plaza - unfortunately on the second floor. That brings me to the only "downside" of the Hotel Liabeny - street noise. Spaniards stay up much later that we North Americans are used to and the disco that is a few buildings away from the hotel kept its doors open until three or four in the morning. We were torn between wanting to leave our beautiful big windows open for the fresh night air and being able to sleep through the sound of people standing right under our windows laughing and talking in the wee hours.
My recommendation in booking at this hotel would be to very clearly request a room with a view of the plaza but on the highest floor.
We spent approximately 120 CDN per night and felt that was a quite reasonable price for a hotel so near all the sights.

Room Tip: Request a view of the plaza but on the top floor to avoid street noise.

A very nice, clean hotel. Big and cozy room, but can be a bit loud due to the 24h passing tourists. It has a nice location - close to the most important sights.
Very nice breakfast with some regional specialities (sausages, ham, cheese).

Bad thing - travel to the airport by metro requires 45min ride, and at least two transfers.

Still a very nice hotel experience. Good place to stay for the weekend city trip.
