“Fast food at its best: best ingredients, rapidly handed out for little money”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

If you go to el Rastro (big multi-street flea market) you should drop by this place, which only sells tostas (toasted slice of white bread with a bit of squished ripe fresh tomato and the topping of your liking and a good drizzle of olive oil) on Sundays, while the flea market is on.
Very yummy, very Spanish, very fast (after you have reached the sometimes very long queue), and very cheap for the size and freshness. I normally take jamon con queso (air-dried ham and cheese) or pulpo a la Gallega (cooked squid slices in olive oil and red bell pepper powder), but they have all different tastes... Take many tissues for the dripping olive oil!

“Quite a bargain”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

Great and large tostas served in an extreme tempo at low cost (2,5€ a piece).

Notice! Only open during the Rastro-market (sunday).

“Most Arrogant Restaurant Establishment---But Cannot Be in Madrid Without Passing By”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

This establishment only opens on Sunday mornings. The rest of the week, they are closed. Despite their opening hours, the only libation served is alcoholic: beer, wine, and sangria (this is Spain, after all). No chairs here. After being served (it is pay-as-you-order), you are told to move away from the bar and go elsewhere to consume your tosta. No establishment could be more snooty.

Yet I cannot come to Madrid without a pilgrimage to Capricho. Hence, I try and make sure my Madrid sojourn always involves a Sunday. Capricho is a family affair. As the name suggests, the proprietor hails from Extremadura, the southwestern autonomous community of Spain. Ramon the father is a bald-headed man given to non-stop histrionics. He is the life of the party. His wife and daughters help him manage the crowd and the extraordinary demand for their tostas.

Tostas are slices of chapata bread onto which heavenly goodies have been piled on---like octopus, ham, bacalo, cheese, gambas...you name it. All finished off with a drizzle of the finest olive oil from, of course, Extremadura.

2 euros a pop. Not bad at all.

Oh, when it is cold they serve a delightful broth for 1.50 euro, and also gazpacho...so it is not just alcohol after all. No worries, when you need coffee there are many bars around.

“Great food at great value in the fun Rastro area”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Good typical Spanish food from the Extremadura region, with nice tapas and simple dishes. Migas (bread crumbs fried and combined with vegetables, great!), cheese (Torta from La Serena, fantastic), great iberico ham, chorizo, cured lomo, olives and other great delicacies. Just wonderful to lunch after a tour on the Rastro on the weekends.

“Great Tostas, Great Experience”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

For me this is a must for Madrid. A rastro tradition with great giant fresh tostas wth generous dosings of olive oil. The line snakes out the door on Sundays when the rastro is up and running by on Saturday, you can take your time inside (still standing room only), that way you can grab a glass of white wine (their speciality) and share some tostas while you listen to the owner's continuous and charming banter with all the customers. My favorite tostas are the setas, smoked salmon and ofcourse you can never go wrong with jamon.
