Lived up to its 4 star rating with nice reception, lobby, bar and rooms with good aircon. Staff friendly and efficient plus its in a good location, close by to the tube station(s) and easy walk into main shopping and restaurant/bar areas. As with similar hotels "of a certain age" it is a little tired and wuld benefit from a make over plus WiFi should be free for guests (why do some management groups think it is still acceptable to charge?!). A real added bonus is the roof top sunbathing area, which is pretty large with lots of beds and bar/cafe plus a large pool - a bit chilly in mid September and closes on the 30th which is something to be aware of. A few solar panels might prove a low cost solution to the cool temperature and enable longer open season which could be beneficial for guests and hotel bookings. Overall, pretty good and would definately choose this hotel for a return visit.

Room Tip: We had a room facing inwards so if you want a "view" ask for street facing room.

Spent 4 nights in this hotel. we arrived early in the morning and even though check in was 2pm there was no problem giving us our room. The hotel is very much old world with decor which was beautiful. The room was of average size, very clean, only negative here was there are no ironing boards,so can only do the inhouse ironing service which is 15 euro. the rooftop pool is excellant. plenty loungers and sofa style lounge areas. Drink on the expensive side at 5 euro for a glass of cola.pool itself is great and excellant views from whole area. Location of this hotel is excellant, within walking distance of shops, plazs mayor and sol, bars and restaurants and even though in the city centre the rooms were very quite. Will most certainly be paying a return visit.

Stayed here for 1 week from 14th Sept. We were going to take the Metro to the hotel but as it was late decided to take a taxi - there are plenty outside the airport and only takes about 25mins. Although the taxi driver didnt speak english we communicated with him very well and he pointed out some attractions along the way and gave advice about pick pockets and to be aware of our handbags etc. Cost around 30euros including the airport supplement.
Check in at the hotel was very swift and the staff were very friendly. The main foyer smelt lovely and had a large flower arrangement which looked lovely.
We were in a room looking over the inner courtyard, not much of a view and did make the room a little dark but otherwise the room was comfortable and the bathroom was large. there are safes in the rooms which are free. Bathroom was nice and large, only thing i would have liked to have would have been tea/coffee facilities in the room as what you would expect.
We were room only so cannot make comments on the food, the bar was rather expensive but what you would expect if you drank in any hotel bar.
The hotel is located on the Gran Via just outside the Metro and bus stops. plenty of restaurants -- would recommend the DiBocca restaurant just down the street-lovely food at a very resonable price. there are plenty of other restaurants if you walk out of thehotel and walk up right up the gran via.
the palace and other plazas are in walking distance. we took the Madrid City Tour to get to the Bernabu Stadium then toured the city on the bus after.
a definatetrip to take is the Zoo we arrived at 10.30 for when itopened and didnt leave till about 5.30!! we took the Metro from the Plaza De Espana - two minutes walk down from the hotel, to the Casa De Campo then walked to the zoo (about 10 mins walk) or you could catch the bus outside the metro down to the zoo.
The hotel roof pool is lovely after an afternoon of sigh seeing. Had no problem getting a bed and free towels are provided. the Pool is very cold but another day we went up it was a little warmer. fantastic views from the roof over the city.

Be aware of pick pockets in crowded areas and keep bags, wallets in close view, also be aware of groups of people that will ask you for you to sign petitions - in quieter areas, they divert your attention then ask to check your ID, we almost got caught by a group but local police caught them and sorted them out....we were lucky!!

We decided to use the Metro to go back to the airport, catch the Plaza De espana change onto the aiport line and your there! simple!! cost around 7.50 euros including the airport supplement and takes around 20mins.
although there is a metro right outside the hotel the plaza de espana is a two minute walk upto the hotel and saves extra changes.

All in all a lovely comfortable hotel with friendly staff in an excellent location. would recommend and would stay here again.

Please dont be put off by previous comments ref scaffolding and building works and windows being taken out, the hotel has recently had rooms refurbished and outside work done, but all has been completed. :)

Room Tip: If you want a room with a view you will have to upgrade. Rooms on the inner courtyard are quiet but...

We booked a Junior Suite for one night before flying home as a treat to ourselves after a drive from Valencia but when we pulled up in the car there was no bell boy to take the luggage or the car which i expect from a hotel of this class i stayed in a cheaper hotel when i landed in Madrid so expected to lug my own luggage about then but not here.
We went inside and managed to find a bellboy to whisk the car away to somewhere at 31 euros a night but hey so what i am too lazy to do it myself and then tried to check in which took an age as there was about 10 people all trying to check in but not the hotels fault it gets busy but the receptionist upgraded us to a massive corner suite with a very long balcony which started in one road and finished in another so good news there the only fault being the cheap kettle and two milk cartons which is a bit tight.
As others say the pool is great and the staff blow hot or cold depending on who you get but overall a nice pleasant experience if you get the right room.
My only real gripe is the Club Emparador which you get in if you book a suite i wanted to go in to grab a free beer and read english newspapers so off we went but a sign outside it said it was in another room which i could not get in so off to reception i go and wait my turn to be told the sign is meant for tomorrow it is in a totally different room so back i go but yet again my keycard did not work so back to reception where i wait again and then they sent a bell boy along to let me in although his master keycard did not work either.
He knocked and the door was opened by one of two girls on a hen night i assume as she had a sash on stating something like that they where in there having a private party with some guys they met on the street i assume because they shot of mighty quick when they saw the bellboy.
Well the room was about fifteen by fifteen foot with 6 chairs not the experience i was expecting what a let down and the previous guests had consumed everything apart from 6 cans of lager i had one of them but only read one page of the paper before i got dragged out by my other half as the room stank of smoke really really stank.

Room Tip: Book through the hotel i found it cheaper.

This hotel was perfect for us. We had a lovely room on the side of the hotel (on a quiter road next to the hotel) we had a big bathroom and bedroom. At breakfast there was a wide rage of continental food (very fresh food) and if you wanted a hot breakfast that was at a supplement but the food is prepared in front of you. Even nicer was the fresh coffee.
The roof terrace was open when we were there, with great views of the city and a reasonable size pool. plenty of sun loungers too. Also a little bar up there too.
Staff were very friendly and helpfull too. The lobby area is immaculatey and smells gorgeous!
The transport system in Madrid is great there are two metro stops very near the hotel and trains run very fequently , you can also get to and from the airport on the metro. The palza mayor and the royal palace are in walking distance aprox 20mins. There are several restuarants and bars near the hotel.
I would definatley recommend my friends and family to stay here.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view of Calle de san Bernardo (quiter side of the hotel)

We stayed here on the 10 September for 3 nights. The room was booked via Easyjet and we paid 93 Euro's B&B for my wife and I. We were impressed by the hotel which is maintained to a high standard. Our room was excellent. The room was on the sixth floor overlooking the main road. The room was very quiet, very well sound proofed. The curtains excluded all external light and the a/c was quiet and effective. A complimentary bottle of Cava was waiting in the room for us when we arrived. A very nice touch. A room of this standard would have been 180 - 200 Euro's a night in London (and the a/c wouldn't have worked!), to give an idea of the standard of the room.

The only reason I have not rated as 5 stars is that the bed was far too firm for us for a good night's sleep, I reported this at reception on the first morning and nothing was done to resolve the problem, no comment as to what could or could not be done. If you like a firm bed, this is a very affordable and excellent hotel.
