First impressions were that we were staying at the "Hot Ama" as they were the only letters working on the illuminated sign, so not a good start!
I'm really unsure as to how this hotel could possibly warrant a four star ranking when for example a standard Ibis is only 2 star?
The exterior of the hotel is probably something Prince Charles would describe as a Monstous Carbuncle with not a blade of grass or a leaf within distance of all of the concrete.
However the entrance hall and reception area was light and spacious enough, with check in efficient if a little lacking in warmth.
In fairness the bedroom was a spacious, clean triple room, with a decent flat screen tv, comortable beds (awful single pillow though) but that is where the positives end! On the other hand, the ceilings and walls were decorated in that kind of concrete chip paper, ancient furniture, 80's style framed print on the wall, thin carpet, only one socket to charge an electrical equipment from and that was dangerously loose in the wall, horrible bathroom with a huge crack in the ceiling and filthy plug holes, slippery bath tub, ancient shower head, old tiles - just generally bleurggh!
The breakfast wasn't included in our room rate and as it came to nearly 15 euros per person once tax was added, we went into the nearby concourse and had our breakast there at a far more reasonable rate.
It is located conveniently to get around the city via rail and metro but I'm not convinced that is reason enough to stay there.
Handy tip re travel - we bought the 3 day Metro Zone A tourist pass which covers the metro, train and buses although some of the metro staff didn't seem to know this themselves! It cost 17 euros 40 cents and was excellent value for money. It even took us back to the Airport Terminal 4 where we then got a free bus to Terminal 1 to fly home.
Madrid is a fabulous city and we hope to return soon (just not at this hotel!)
