“Strange hotel, great park”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2012

Stayed one night in this hotel and worked all the next day in a hotel suite, eating breakfast and lunch. This is a strange hotel. It is a historic building which has been totally modernised and decked out in black and white: everything is either black or white. It is clean, comfortable with free wi-fi, and a laptop in the room. The huge park across the road is a definite plus.
I arrived at 8pm and thought I might read in the bar if it was quiet. It was not so much quiet as morgue-like. There was no one there at all, including behind the bar. Reception said they would radio for a barman if I wanted!

The room-service menu was very limited and hopeless for someone like me that can't eat bread. Breakfast was more than adequate with good service (although they don't know to make tea with boiling water). Lunch was delicious although we were the only ones in the restaurant. This was a good classy hotel and the staff were excellent but absolutely no atmosphere. I would not rush back.

My client paid and I have no idea of the rate.

This hotel was chosen for us as it was a conference hotel. It is a beautiful historic building directly across from Retiro park. While the exterior has retained its historic look, the interior is completely modern. This conversion seems to have been pretty successful. The rooms are pretty standard hotel rooms with a nice small balcony that looks out over the street. The french doors were great for getting fresh air into the room. Storage in the room is somewhat limited as there is no closet or dresser, only a small wardrobe. A nice feature of the hotel is that the rooms have a laptop for your use. We got good wireless in our room, but they have a horrible wireless access policy. You have to physically visit the front desk to get the username and password for the day. The first day we got 24 hour access, the second day we got 3 day access. And this isn't access for the room, it is for each device. So if you have a second device (smart phone, iPad, etc.), you have to go to the front desk again for a password. It was quite annoying. Front desk staff was younger and seemed fairly inexperienced. The food and selections at the breakfast buffet are quite good. However, they are very understaffed. You first have to find a clean place to sit, and then the coffee service is quite slow. Fresh orange juice was very good as was the selection of fruit. Access to the park is wonderful, and the Prado is close by. But this hotel is quite removed from most activities in the city (Shopping, Plaza Mayor, etc.). Also, there are very limited dining options nearby. If you are looking for a good location close to the excitement that makes Madrid, this might not be the hotel for you. However, if you are looking for a hotel a little out of the way, quiet, and with access to some of Madrid's major attractions, this one might be for you.

Room Tip: If you want a queen or king size bed, make sure to request it. Our room had two twin beds pushed to...

It is a small and elegant hotel with great views of the Retiro Park, close to the museums and within walking distance to the Plaza Mayor. The room is designed for convenience and comfort; long work desk, plenty of room around the washing basin to place your toiletries, a small balcony, varied lighting option so that one is able to read.... I stayed there for 4 nights alone and enjoyed every minute. Most hotels in Spain do not equip with kettle, I bought a small coffee machine and made my own expresso in the middle of the night. Three words to conclude: Peaceful, Bright and Elegant.

Loved this hotel and nicely situated near parks, botanic garden, Prado, etc. The rooms were big, shower powerful, excellent versatile lighting system, small balcony was useful to view park and know weather on 5th floor. Very attractive and very modern and free wifi (although wifi consistency was a bit irritating). Although our room overlooked the main road, the windows were well insulated. We could hear the baby in the next room, but only the dull sound of traffic. Loved the breakfast buffet - very fresh fruit and the bread/rolls/buns were very good. This is the second hotel I have been in this month with a frosted glass door to the bathroom - I hate this! At night when you/partner use the facilities the light from the bathroom lights up the rest of the room! Plus for those who are sharing rooms on business trips the privacy factor is annoying. That is my only complaint as the everything else was excellent.

I had a second floor room with a French door that led out to a small balcony. There was some street noise - and the garbage men come around 2:00AM - but overall the room was peaceful. The bathroom is nice and has a really cool shower head (once you figure out how to use it). The bath products are scant - no conditioner or body lotion - and of average quality. The bed was comfortable and had a long body pillow. In your room, you only get heat or cool, depending on how they have set the master, which was a bit odd. I was there with colleagues who wanted to cool their room but they could not, as the master was only set to heat. It is in a great location, across from a huge park and about 5 min from the Puerto del Sol and 3 min (if that) from the Prado. The computer in the room is nice and the wireless is good. I thought breakfast had a lot of variety and the room service I ordered one night was quick, hot and tasty. I also had a good lunch there one day and the catering for our business meetings was quite good.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to street noise, ask for a higher floor or an interior room.

Stayed over the new years in this hotel. Had the quad room. Kids love the bunk beds. Near most attraction. A quiet location. Kids love the playground across the street from the Retiro Park. Hotel was clean and very modern. Free wifi. Staff is friendly but not as knowledgeable as should be. Would stay again. Buffet is ok. Typical European breakfast buffet.
