What a surprise this place was!! We'd just checked in to our hotel (Suites Viena), and strolled up the street for a bite of dinner. Came to the Cafe Viena, which is associated with the Hotel, & decided to check it out. Boy are we glad we did!
After the smoked salmon mayonnaise rolls that came free with our drinks, we ordered a couple of tapas @ 2 Euro each.
First came Callos a la Madrilenos, a special Madrid slow cooked tripe. Husband admitted afterwards that he was dubious about my choice but thought that if it wasn't any good that I could eat it all as it was only a tapas, not a whole course. We both declared it to be absolutely delicious.
Next was Canelloni morcilla, which was a black pudding Canelloni with pine nuts. Another hit!
Third tapas husband's turn to choose, he had trouble deciding between the Wild boar with orange or the Milhojas orejones. He went with the latter as I wanted to leave room for dessert. It was a layered tower of alternating dried apricots & rocquefort cheese topped with walnuts and then honey drizzled over it. Husband declared it delicious. I found it quite rich and needed to be savoured in small bites.
Then for dessert I had the 3 chocolates which was beautifully layered dark, milk & white chocolate creme. He chose lemon meringue tart. Yum! And we were full.
All up it totalled 23,50 euro for 2 beers, 1 lemon drink, 3 tapas, 2 desserts & 2 coffees.
We'll be back to try the wild boar!
