Walking around the center of Madrid we were told around this great bakery. It was opened back in 1894. I ordered the chocolate brazo gitano, it was amazing. We also tried the vanilla and chocolate macaroons. This is a must visit for breakfast or just for a nice dessert and coffee.

Come here to get delicious and authentic pastries -- the napoleons with chocolate and crema are to die for! We will miss them tremendously in the US. Crowded and crazy counter, but be patient and persistent, the service is good and they will get your order. Also try the dulce de leche rolled cookies -- they are amazing.

La Mallorquina is a historic pasteleria which has been operating at its location on Calle Mayor, just off Puerto del Sol since 1894. This is a busy but very enjoyable place to try if you enjoy local eateries and food.

We visited twice during our recent trip to Madrid. It was busier first thing in the morning, just after 8am with virtually no standing space at the U shaped standing bar. Luckily there is a take-away order counter at the other side of the small shop with the same pastries so you can just order there, pay and take your food out to the square and eat there if you like.

During our afternoon visit on another day, we found La Mallorquina still crowded but it was easier to make our way to the bar where we were able to order coffees to have along with the chocolate Napolitana (€1.30), which is probably their most famous food. Yes, the Napolitana is sweet and tastes delicious, goes well with the bold coffees served up here.

Note: Places like these can seem intimating at first as it is crowded and people are moving fast in and out of the shop. Don't worry. Service staff are tourist friendly and will understand what you are asking for. You can also just point to what you want, that will do the trick.

In the end, we really enjoyed La Mallorquina, finding this a very enjoyable food experience in Madrid, one worth repeating if you enjoy bakeries and/or visiting historic venues during your travels.

I'm writing this in English because it seems many of the visitors who come here on TA are tourists.

What caught my eye about this place is that the establishment has been around since the late 1800s. Apparently considered to have the "best pastries" in Madrid. I didn't get to experience due to the worst workers I've met in Spain.

We have been visiting this beautiful country for more than three weeks and today is our last day in Madrid. After ordering a couple of pastries, a very rude worker asked in Spanish, "do you want anything else?" I was still shopping, looking at the beautiful pastries behind the glass. So I responded back in Spanish, "one moment please."

The place was not full so he didn't need to hurry me. The guy made a horrible face at me, and rudely asked me the question again rather loudly repeatedly and the young blond working beside him started laughing. The entire scenario was absurd.

We didn't end up ordering as after the very bad treatment, we didn't want to give them any of our business.

Anyway, if you're a tourist or local, I hope you don't end up getting served by these two poor excuses of a human.

Wonderful place! This pasteleria is one of the oldest in Madrid, it has been there since 1894 if I remember right. It tells something...Crowded, noisy, busy but just great! Have Your coffee and Choco Napolitana there or take away, both choices are possible. If You choose take-away, they will make a nice little package for You in just a few seconds. Maybe not the cheapest, but very affordable and great quality! Very central location.
