Description: Las Cuevas de Luis Candelas, is one of the most historic restaurants in Madrid. Founded in 1949, is located in the Arc de Cuchilleros, next to the emblematic Plaza Mayor. Named after the famous caves gave shelter in the nineteenth century the most famous bandit of the capital, Luis Candelas, who robbed the rich to help the poor. It offers excellent traditional cuisine: the Roasted Suckling Pig and Roasted Lamb in a wood oven, the Madrid stew, Grilled Fishes, or typical desserts of Madrid. It has a wonderful terrace and an extensive wine list. It opens till 13:00 to 00:00 everyday.

This place is touristy but so is Botin and usually the reason people eat here is because they could not get a table at Botin. Just about every place within four blocks or so is touristy.

The food was good. I found the cochinillo asado to be better than what I've eaten at Botin. The meat was succulent and juicy while the skin was hard and crispy with very little char. I think this is the place to really enjoy cochinillo in Madrid.

Nice wine list and well priced. They have an un-appelated, in-house varietal that was actually really good.

Here's the bad thing--they allow a group of college student bards to interrupt meals. It's incredibly annoying. I was there with my wife and we were visibly annoyed. A table next to us of Spanish businessmen were also visibly annoyed and also vocal about it. Just when we thought they were leaving an idiotic woman from "Boca Raton" stood up and waved a €20 around. They understandably lingered and we were treated to another several songs.

Suggest you mention to the maitre d' that you don't want to be treated to this.

I’m usually weary of restaurants which look very touristy and tend to stay clear of them. The Las Cuevas de Luis Candelas looks like one such restaurant, in a white stucco building outside of which an employee in costume stands guard, complete with a rifle.

Being non-Spaniards and quite hungry at the relatively early time of about 20:00, we decided to “just have tapas” in one of the restaurant’s numerous rooms. Little did we know what how great they would be! The croquettes, red peppers, octopus, and beer were all terrific, served by friendly, genuinely nice waiters in costume who did not try to push things on us foreign tourists. The walls throughout the restaurant are covered with tiles and the rustic wooden furniture enhances the atmosphere.

Realizing that both the service and food would be worth staying on for dinner, we were able to snag a table outside where we proceeded to have a delicious meal – suckling pig, lamb chops, and fish, to name a few, along with great, reasonably priced wines. Our only disappointment was the “fried milk”, which turned out to be a small piece of warm custard with a slight crust.

Have your photo taken with the rifleman for a souvenir of a great restaurant.

cute off the main drag restaurant, claim to fame Jimmy Carter ate here! looks like a very old castle type place, the servers wear the traditional garb of the era. All charming servers. Nice hot sunny day in Madrid for an al fresco lunch. We started with the Iberico ham and chorizo (every meal in Spain started with the Iberico) I had a traditional Spanish Tortilla very yummy and very filling! My mother in law had the gazpacho and raved as it was layered and made in her soup bowl. My husband had a steak and father in law a salad (that he raved about) over all great meal , great location, atmosphere. The server walking around with the rifle was cool too, Recommend

The restaurant is in a cave. The food was nice. We started with the octopus which was very flavoursome. As mains, we had the lamb and the sea bass which were both good. My friend really enjoyed his Gazpacho and thought it was one of the best he has ever had. In the middle of dinner there was some spanish singers with their guitars which created a very lively and authentic atmosphere. The waiter was very helpful in giving us direction after the dinner. I would urge people to consider this restaurant instead of eating at Plaza Mayor (very touristy and not worth the price) if they are around this area.
