“Great Calamari and Papas Bravas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2011

My husband and I ate lunch here twice on a recent trip to Madrid. The calamari bocadillos (sandwiches) were excellent at 2.50 Euros each and the Papas Bravas (potatos with a spicy sauce) were the best we ate in Spain. They also just had a tapas plate you could get with calamari--the second day we got one sandwich and one of those and split it plus the potatos. It's a small place and you eat it at the bar, but for a quick, cheap lunch, it was excellent.

“Excellent cheap food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2011

I had their specialty, the bocadillo de calamares. It's a no-frills sandwich - just squid and bread - but perfect in its simplicity. The calamares were fresh out of the fryer and were very tasty. Combine that with a cerveza and it's a perfect snack, all for roughly 4 Euros!

There is seating upstairs but I chose to stay downstairs at the bar. It can get crowded depending on what time you visit but service is pretty quick. A must-try if you're visiting Plaza Mayor.

“Some of the best cheap eats around Plaza Mayor!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2011

It's hard to ear well and cheaply in the Plaza Mayor, but come here and you will do both! For 2.65€ ($3.70) you can get a sandwich of fried calamari (called a bocadillo de calamares) which is absolutely delicious. Eat it standing at the bar with a caña (a beer) or a soda and your snack/ light meal will come to around $5. Doesn't get much better or tastier than that!

“Don't miss this place! Order the bocadillos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2011

Pros:
- Cheap prices (at time of visit 2.50 euros per bocadillo)
- Quick service
- Bocadillo de calamares is recommended
- at Plaza Mayor

Cons:
- Not a sit-down eatery
- No wait service
- Can get crowded at certain hours
- Because of its location, can be easily missed
- limited menu choices

Casa Rua has the appearance of a hole-in-a-wall, but there have been so many people that have come by here (you'll notice the scribblings on the 2nd floor wall). The bocadillos are a steal! Only a 2.5 euros an order, they make either a great snack or meal. Besides fried calamari, choices include tortilla (potato omelet), morcilla (blood sausage), chorizo (pork sausage) among a few others. A few tapas are served here also.
