Throw in great Americans like Hopper and Sargent, and you have nearly 1000 pieces in one Europe's greatest permanent collections. Masterpieces include works by Duhrer, Rembrandt, and Degas, among others. This is a can't miss museum when you're in Madrid.

The Thyssen is a great stop to make if you are in Madrid. It's walking distance from many hotels, but even if you have to metro it's worth it. The paintings are very beautiful, and there are many different types of art to view and study. The descriptions on the paintings are not as well done or informative as the ones at the Prado though. If you go on Monday afternoon admission is free, so if you aren't a huge art fan or don't think you'll stay for more than a couple of hours, this is the time to go. It may be more crowded though. The museum is set up and organized very well and easy to follow.

We stopped in the Thyssen to see the Picasso and Impressionist paintings. We were very pleasantly surprised at the variety of artwork the Thyssen has. The museum has a main collection and a wing that is dedicated to the collection of Carmen Thyssen. Not to be missed.

Showed passport for reduced entry of €8 which also included temporary Max Beckmann exhibition.IMO fantastic value. Took lift to floor 2 and travelled down the building chronologically. From Duccio to Derain and so many other artists in between, including my particular favourite, German Expressionists. 2 hours or more of total immersion. An outstanding collection. Staff were friendly, helpful and patient with my faltering Spanish.

To be able to review paintings from 6 centuries , numerous artists .. specialist collections and a temporary challenging exhibition (Beckmann) in one glorious building over 3 floors is a real opportunity and experience...allow lots of time ..2.5 hrs min .. and you can really embrace the artistic treasure house..

Wonderful shop with an array of materials . Books etc to match all budgets..

And then the restaurant .cafe with enticing outdoor terrace..

If you visit just one museum in Madrid this should be it .excellent value for money with concessions available

Strongest on 17th-19th century European art although it has more than just that. Not too crowded. If it were not almost right next to the Prado it would be known as the world-class museum that it is.

A really nice museum that complements two other nearby museums (Prado and Reina Sofia). It is also slightly faster than two giants - without sacrificing artistic experiences

If it weren’ t almost next door to the Prado this would be acknowledged as the world class museum that it is. El Greco, Pissarro, Van Gogh, corot, more Canaletto in one place than I can think of anywhere else. Fantastic. Unmissable.
