I would not normally stay in a two star hotel but as guests of the international brigade of Madrid we did not chose the hotel. To our surprise it turned out to be in one of the best positioned locations in the centre of the city. Just off the main square and surrounded by dozens of inexpensive restaurants, bars and cafe's. The hotel is nicely appointed with a small lounge area at the front. It has a variety of different sized bedrooms which are a long way from modern decor but they are all clean, spacious and plainly decorated. The bathrooms have modern fittings with a reasonable shower. No English channels on the tiny television and the walls are rather thin. The staff are excellent and always good natured and helpful. They serve a small but reasonable breakfast from 7am to 11am and have there own restaurant next door with very good food. It's slightly more expensive than other restaurants in the area but well worth trying. Overall I would recommend this hotel as a very good base to explore this beautiful city.

I stayed in this hostal for three nights. The first night we stayed in a room at the back which was very small and had a small window. The next morning I asked for an upgrade to a bigger room and they did. I didn't even have to pay more. The rooms are basic but clean.
The breakfast was not great but good enough. We could leave our luggage all monday after check-out.

Located about 8 min from Puerta del Sol, with access to the metro & Renfe, & easily walkable to Plaza Mayor, Gran Via, Palacio Real, even El Prado. Very central location.
Breakfast has a good amount of food: toast, pastries, ham, cheese, many jams, cereals, pineapple & oj, several teas, and all buffet style. The waiters were very friendly.
Wifi is weak in our room but consistent. It's stronger in the breakfast room downstairs. Hot water is good. A/c and heat are adjustable. Our room has a safe we can use without first leaving a deposit. Large sized closet and bathroom, with standing shower. Our rooms were cleaned daily.
Staff is very polite, friendly, and helpful. English spoken adequately. There's many books in the breakfast area and lounge area on the ground floor.

In the heart of Madrid, undoubtedly, its main asset. Price is good value as well. It offers no luxury but you pay for a good, very clean room, lovely breakfast, awesome location, and helpful staff (you always find a moody one, but 95% of them are very nice).
I would recommend it and go back!

Stayed here for one night en route to Cuenca. Booked a double room which was a good size and with a well equipped bathroom. Room was on the top floor, with lift only to the third floor so had to walk up one flight. OK as only had hand luggage.
Reception staff were very helpful - street map of the city provided and advice on getting to the bus station.
Breakfast included and adequate.
Would certainly use Hostal Persal again myself and recommend to friends visiting Madrid as it is good location to see the city's sites.

Room Tip: If you have heavy or cumbersome luggage ask for a room on 1st-3rd floors.
