Even when quite busy- such as when we last went on a sunny Sunday afternoon-. it was still a beautiful peaceful place to be- and to watch the families boating on the lake, walking round, or enjoying the entertainment.
We loved the colourful flowers, the autumn trees and well kept gardens.
It was only spoilt by the Police 'arresting' and then writing a ticket /fine for 2 young girls who where playing the harp and violin beautifully. It was because apparently they were using an amplifier ( although not loud) A very large crowd gathered to watch what was going on.
Other 'buskers' were using them too- but were not approached by the Police when we were there.
We loved watching the juggler, the dancers, and the guy doing the large bubbles!
The lake has rowing boats you can hire or a trip boat. We saw very large fish in the water. Fountains were flowing and very pretty.

Great park especially when the leaves are changing color. Make sure you spend some time here when in Madrid.

Wow, what a fun place. We arrived around 6:30 at night and were greeted by beautiful gardens, fountains and people everywhere enjoying the park. In the dark, we found the lake and monument with lions, the crystal palace, Velasquez palace (?), all lit up with lovely streetlamps. Nice oasis in a busy city.

This park is deceptively large with incredible beauty. We took a break here and what a fabulous place to do so. We sad by the crystal palace, listened to the musicians (for which we gave 1 Euro), and watched the birds, the fountains, and enjoyed the colors of fall... Spectacular!

The Buen Retiro Park is the crown jewel of Madrid parks. It is simply very beautiful, a combination of French Baroque formal park planning with symmetrical vistas and the English park landscape style in other sectors. The Buen Retiro began as the royal hunting ground outside the city proper. It had been much larger but is now reduced in scale given that the city has grown up around it. The park is surrounded by fences and there are many entry gates but I strongly suggest that visitors choose the Puerta de Felipe IV on the Calle Alfonso XII or the Puerta de Hernani on the Calle Alcala near the Salamanca district. The heart of the park and not to be missed is the Monument to Alfonso XII an enormous beaux artes monument to the king. It exudes grandeur and is beautifully cared for. It is sited on the large boating lake that marks the center of the park. But walking along the beautiful alles and tree lined walkways is the only and best way to enjoy the park. I found the more heavily wooded South West section marked by the Puerta Murillo to be particularly lovely, in parts is is almost wild and solitary. I chose a Monday for my visit. I imagine that the park is heavily used on the weekends and I am sure seeing Madrilleno at leisure enjoying the weekend is every bit as interesting as my choice of a more tranquil Monday visit. Having said that Buen Retiro is the jewel in the crown do not discount all the other lovely and well-cared for parks especially on the western side of the city around the Royal Palace. They too are very beautiful and afford beautiful views of both the palace and from the heights views across the river to the suburban districts of the city.
