Owner description: The Sorolla Museum preserves the original atmosphere of both home and study of the painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, 1923). It houses the richest collection of his works, colourful paintings irradiating light and vitality. It is one of the more complete and best preserved artist homes remaining in Europe. The garden, also designed by himself, is a beautiful oasis in the city.

“Great feeling in this residence”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

The Museum is in the middle of a suburb/city and most unexpected, which adds to the pleasure of visiting it. The paintings are wonderful, and this museum has a very homely feel to it as it was his residence.

“Great Impressionist Art in the Painter's Home”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

This is a good counterpoint to viewing art in the institutional settings of the Prado, Thyssen, etc. From the Andalusian style fountain in front of the house, to the natural light filled painter's studio, to the family dining room, visiting this museum is a delightful way to immerse yourself in another time. Sorolla's glorious impressionist paintings were a revelation to me. His portraits capture each individual's personality and the landscapes, particularly the beach scenes ,encapsulate all the shimmering light and movement of the water and air.

“The best spanish impressionist painter”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

This museum is sublime! It features the beautiful impressionist paintings of Joachim Sorolla all displayed lovingly in his former residence. Not only do you get to view the pictures but also to see an old spanish home in its original condition. If you are tired of the heavy, religous paintings at the Prado, or the nonsense of the modern art museums, come here! I love this work and felt like I got to see a very personal side of spain through Sorolla's paintings of his family, of the everyday people of Spain and the beauty of the country in the landscapes. Be sure and get the audio-guide! The museum is a 25 minute walk from Puerto del Sol, or a very short cab ride. SO WORTH IT!

“Lovely museum and free for students studying in the EU”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

I wasn't planning on going but my friends who live in Madrid gave it glowing reviews. Now I know why! The house and gardens are absolutely breathtaking (you should go just to see them) and the artwork is very nicely displayed. Plus, you can get a feel for how the artist lived as many of the rooms have been kept as close to how they were in his lifetime as possible. This museum is much smaller than other museums in Madrid and is not near as packed, giving it a much more intimate, cozy feel. I really enjoyed it. Also, if you are a student in the EU with a valid university ID you get in for free!
