No matter where you are, from Shanghai to Madrid this hotel chain will make you feel confortable. In Madrid centre, you just park the car and everything else will be done walking or by taxi. In case I need to go to Madrid I'll use the same hotel

This hotel is certainly dated, but it makes up for it in just about every other way. During our 4 night stay the staff were wonderful, from the porter, the desk, our lovely house maid, right down to the wait staff who remembered how we liked our coffee. Its restaurant food was some of the best around and the breakfasts were of a very high standard too, with all the hot dishes cooked to order. Incense burning in the hallways outside the lifts may not be everyone's cup of tea, but added another layer of charm.
Add its location and Villa Real would be hard to beat. One of the best all round hotel stays during our entire trip.

My wife and 2 kids stayed here in July at the suggestion of a friend who had lived in Madrid. We chose it primarily because of location and the fact that some of the "suites" come with 2 bathrooms. We got a suite at the back of the hotel overlooking nothing. The suite has 2 floors with a very narrow and somewhat dangerous stairway. Each floor has a small bathroom. The suite was nice, but the rooms were quite narrow, certainly not 5 star quality such as one would find at the Mandarin or Peninsula in Hong Kong. The furnishings were just average and the pull out sofa for the kids was not very comfortable as a bed and took up most of the room when extended. The hotel itself is in a great location (walking distance to the Prado and many restaurants). The hotel also has some great 2,000 year old Roman mosaics scattered on the walls in the lobby area. The breakfast buffet was fairly expensive but excellent. The staff was very accommodating. I just don't know how this could be rated 5 stars.

Room Tip: Get a room in the front of the hotel with a view of the park

From the moment you drive up, you get the feeling that you are royalty. The building looks like a castle from the exterior and the lobby is beautiful and grand.

The staff is second to none. We were there only 2 nights and by the time we left, we were on a first name basis with everyone.

The location is perfect with a gorgeous view. We were upgraded to a corner suite that had two balcony's with perfect views.

I could go on for hours about this place, but I almost can't put it into words.

We stayed here on New Years for the same rate I would pay at a highway Holiday Inn back in the states. You will love it here!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the square on a high floor. You will all of Madrid!

I booked my room through the Small Luxury Hotels site, and was blown away by the size of the room. It even included a sitting area with a leather couch. I had signed up for a SLH membership years ago and must have put red wine down as my drink of choice, so was welcomed with a free bottle of wine in my room. The staff were very helpful and as another commenter noted, the laundry service was speedy. The location is fantastic - close to many things you want to see in Madrid, like the Prado, the Reina Sofia, the Thyssen and the Circulo des Bellas Artes. I would return in a minute.

Several years later the Villa Real still has the same high standards, great staff and refreshing welcome glass of champagne. The restaurant dinner menu is definitely worth exploring. If some unexpected rain arrives just as you are leaving for an adventure, the hotel umbrellas are big and do the job well! Recommended whole-heartedly and unreservedly.

Room Tip: ask for a duplex facing the plaza
