I sat here one afternoon and had a wonderful cup of coffee and Jamon Sandwich.
It is about 5 minutes from the Westin Palace Hotel....uphill.

This plaza, just east of Puerta del Sol, features a tremendous array of taverns and restaurants nearby. The square itself is filled with tables, so that you can enjoy the people watching while you enjoy your drink and tapas. Our hotel was very near Santa Ana, and we had dinner at a different place near here almost every evening. We enjoyed Miau, Malaspina, and Las Bravas, and there were several others that looked delightful. Don't overplan, just go and stop in at a place that looks inviting!

The Plaza is filled with tables and umbrellas offering a place to enjoy some tapas and a beer while watching the street scenes of the city. Get there early to get a good seat in the middle of the Plaza.

This is a nice little square, not for from Puerta del Sol.
The square is dominated by the castle-like ME hotel on the west and the Teatro Español on the east.
During the day, the square is quite quiet (not to say – boring), but things get very lively in the evenings, when masses of people come to enjoy cafés, restaurants and live performances.

So, being honest, Plaza de Santa Ana is nothing special but the area is pretty cool. In the myriad of side streets and roads leading off the Plaza are a wealth of decent, fair priced restaurants and bars offering all different sorts of food. Place doesn't really get busy until 9pm+.
