“Quiet during the day, lively in the evenings.”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

This is a nice little square, not for from Puerta del Sol.
The square is dominated by the castle-like ME hotel on the west and the Teatro Español on the east.
During the day, the square is quite quiet (not to say – boring), but things get very lively in the evenings, when masses of people come to enjoy cafés, restaurants and live performances.

“Around the Square is better”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

So, being honest, Plaza de Santa Ana is nothing special but the area is pretty cool. In the myriad of side streets and roads leading off the Plaza are a wealth of decent, fair priced restaurants and bars offering all different sorts of food. Place doesn't really get busy until 9pm+.

“Favourite spot in the evening”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

Each of our four nights in Madrid were spent, in part, in Plaza de Santa Ana at one of the open air cafes surrounding the leafy square.
Drinks were more expensive here, but the square burst into life after dark when all manner of performers entertained the customers, even a terrible Michael Jackson impressionist!
Once the tables fill up seats are extremely hard to find. We didn't eat in the square, preferring to eat in the smaller restaurants near our hotel in La Latina.

“Lively square- get a massage”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We had tapas here twice. The food was fine but the atmosphere electric. An Asian guy gives seated massages- neck and upper body for 15 Euros. Lasts about 20 minutes. Bar none, the BEST massage ever had.

“Great square to get some food”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Some of the best restaurants in Madrid can be found around this square. You have Lateral and Tartufo, some great tapas joints, and even a decent German pub, if you find yourself peckish for bratwurst. Move down to La Mucca, or up to Ginger at Plaza Angel if you want a more formal meal, and walk up further to Plaza Jacinto Benavente to get the best churros con chocolate in town, or grab a movie at Ciné Ideal (shows films in English only.)
