My recommendation is to come earlier in the day as the palace is huge and it will not allow entrance after late afternoon hours. It is impressive from the exterior as well, however, it should be visited in its entirety.
It is the official residence of the Spanish royal family in Madrid, however, currently used for state ceremonies. The palace has 135,000 square metres of floor space and 3,418 rooms in total. It is considered the largest functioning palace of this kind and the largest in Europe.

Beautiful palace right across a massive cathedral. The biggest downside is no photos allowed in many rooms. Only the main entrance lobby are photos really allowed. The cathedral was a much better visit in my opinion.

Worth it 100%! It’s free from 4-6pm for all EU and Latin American citizens. Obviously there will be a line, but it moves really fast!

This is the 3rd time that we visited the Palace and we always learn something new. It is really one of these “must do” things while in Madrid. The only thing is that the staff members, from security to guides, are simply looking bored and unenjoyable, not smiling, to say the least. A little more customer service would go a long way!

We were very lucky to see the Royal Coach together with a Cavalry Escort on its way to collect a dignitary who was to have an audience with His majesty! Very lucky to see it and very interesting to watch the ceremonial.
