while we were there there was a parade in the square, i think it was a carnival, it was very good and the costumes were very clever. The square itself is large with a statue in it. There are some lovely bars and shops dotted around, and down the side streets some unusual shops. Well worth the walk from our hotel

This is a large pedestrian only zone full of restaurants and shops. There is a covered mall type area which is great for rainy days. It is nice not having to dodge the traffic.

This is likely a high rent area for the shop owners and that is reflected in the prices. Also, you will see the same merchandise over and over again and little variation in the prices.

Great central plaza with everything a tourist wants, to be distracted, by the great architecture, the food, drink, statues - both stone and living, olde worlde atmosphere, and toursist office. If you are a philatelist, this is where Madrid comes to buy stamps! But if you are a woman, beware the "flower sellers" who attempt to place a rose in your buttonhole, thus ruffling your jacket, while trying to lift your wallet. They look innocent, and are so swift that you don't even know they are the bad guys!

You could almost sense how one felt years ago standing at the sidelines watching activities being good or bad at the Plaza. Like many cobblestone alleys that leads up to the plaza, tracing the footsteps of yesteryears of activities; again it embraces you to be part of its history. Be there sit at the Cafe when the sun draws near to to welcome the night.. the change and color just blows you away. One of the best place to chill out after exploring Madrid for the day.

Tips 1: F&B outlets are pricey.
Tips 2: You can buy your City Tour tickets at south corner souvenir store. Route 1 stop is close by.
Tips 3: Souvenirs store plenty
Tips 4: Free tours available

A must visit stop for all visitors to Madrid, unfortunately we were then in Feb so weather was against us a bit, but street entertainment was good, the area has a good selection of bars with outside seating which will be great in Summer
