This plaza is the centre of the radial network of some main Madrilean streets, also the place of one subway stations. It is a major touristic attraction and commuters transportation hub as well.
The square is also surrounded by beautiful, old buildings, one of them displaying on its central tower a famous clock whose bells mark the traditional eating of the Twelve Grapes and the beginning of a new year.
On its pedestrian central island, the square is dominated by a few statuary monuments, the tallest one being the Equestrian Statue of Carlos III. However, the most photographed piece is a bronze statue of a bear standing on its hind feet as it reaches for fruit among the leaves of a strawberry tree. This is a more recent monument, dating from the second half of the 20th century and it represents the main heraldic symbols of the city and of Spain.

Madrid was Awesome, the people, the food, the Sangria. Use the Metro everywhere you go, no need to rent a car.

This large square is home to numerous statues and a Metro station. The surrounding buildings are all works of art. It’s always crowded with locals and tourists alike. Protests have been known to take place here. Lots of restaurants and shopping on the streets leading away from Sol. Keep an eye on your belongings.

This square brings me a double impression, on the one hand - this is a beautiful ensemble of architecture, presenter of those times and that city of Madrid. On the other hand - awfully crowded place, you can't take a step without bump into someone. Same situation in the subway. I lived near the "Hospital de 12 Octubre" station and Puerta del Sol was my exchange station.

Perhaps the best place to visit in Madrid. Pls take out at least 4 hours for the experience of walking thru the huge area. There were thousands of people there . This is where you will find the centre of spain and the famous statue of the bear and the strawberry tree
