My initial experience of the Plaza was coming up from the metro after having arrived from Seville. What I as greeted by was a pseudo Disneyland vaudevillian experience that was so tacky it was comical. Poorly costumed Mickey Mice (yes there is more than one mouse on display), Donald Duck and to cap it off Woody from Toy Story are all there to peddle their cheap balloon swords and stitch you up for a photo that comes at a price. But it gets better. Not to be out done there are also characters from the popular Nickleodeon series Sponge Bob Square Pants just to arrival their Disney counterparts. If I want Americana, I'll take a trip to Anaheim and visit the real thing.

As a tourist destination it leaves a lot to be desired. It's seedy, dirty and full of people peddling cheap wares that really deserve to be sold at a circus. The only thing of any real interest, the fluorescent Tio Pepe Billboard is nowhere to be seen; taken down as the new owners of the building it sits on top of decide what to do with it.

My advice walk quickly through and if you can avoid it for the rest of your short stay in this awful city then you would be doing yourself a big favour.

This is a central location in Madrid that you have to visit. There are hundreds of people that come and go throughout the Square at all hours of the day and night. Many of the roads in Madrid lead to this one central location. There's also a metro station right in the middle of the square which also connects to many lines in Madrid. There are many places to eat as well as many places to shop in and around the square. Also at nighttime there people selling drinks such as beer and soda in the square as well as people selling knockoff items like handbags off of blankets. We were there during the Spanish austerity protests, and we felt that we were very safe and there was a large police presence that was present. We stayed at a hotel that was very close to this location and I would highly recommend doing that as well.

I've never seen such a lively place in my life! The place is vibrant and people are so energetic!! One can't say that she's been to Madrid without visiting this place on a friday night. There are a lot of streets originating from this plaza and each of them is packed with hundreds of people. You can do shopping, have food, and have lots of other fun here. Just sitting down and watching people is an experience one must have.
