if you're looking for the basics (clean bed, clean shower) then Hostal Ivor is a great place considering it's prime location.

Wifi was incosistant at times, and noises from cleaners in the early morning are very loud, but all in all i wasn't there in Madrid to sleep...

they don't give you a key to enter the building, and sometimes the receptionist dozes off if you're coming late in the morning.

Really impressed! Only 200m form Royal Opera House one way and Puerto De Sol the other, on a busy pedestrainised shopping street. I booked 2 rooms, a double and a triple and asked for balconies onto the street, rather than the quieter rear. Our triple room actually was a quad, with 1 double and 2 singles. Both were next door to each other (room 16 double and 17 quad) had a fridge, air con, lcd tv but no english channels, full bathroom with shower and bath, quad also had bidet, towels provided and daily maid service and balconies onto the street.
Our rooms had shutters, curtains and double glazed french windows. I'd read other reviews of central hotels being really noisy. With the doors shut, there were no noise problems, but the street noise was deafening with the glass doors open, but that was just what we wanted. Balcony was brilliant for people watching as busy all day AND ALL NIGHT and normally with opera singing buskers below, perfect!
Staff were very helpful and reception is open 24/7 which was great as we didn't arrive till1am. The Hostal is above the shops about 200m from Opera Metro Station, so easeily accesible from the airport for €2.50 each single (we couldn't get a taxi as there were 5 of us and no large taxis). Or there is a 24 hr express bus from the airport for €2 each which stops at Plaza Cibiles and you can walk or bus the last km.
To enter the Hostal, you go thru a door on the street (you have to press the door bell to be let in and then again on the inner door, so very safe and we never waited more than a minute for it to open) the reception is on the 3rd floor but the entrance to the Hostal is on the 2nd and again you have to wait for the door to open. They also let us leave our luggage for a few hours on check out day, which was great although checkout isn't til 12 noon, which is also a bonus.
Plaza Mayor is also about 300m away. We did a day of shopping a day of sightseeing on the Hop on Hop off open top bus (nearest stop by Opera House) and sorry but no Museums for us, so 3rd day at The Warner Brothers Theme Park. Fab!!!
If you want to go there, go down into the underground at Sol, then down again to the Renfe trains. It takes about 45minutes on the train and you need to change once. We also bought combined train and Park tickets for the same price as just the Park tickets and we got them 3 for 2, so a real bonus and it meant we didn't have to queue to buy them at the park. but beware you cannot buy them from the automated machines, so have to queue at desk and they only take cash not cards. Also trains only go every hour and park doesn't open til 12 noon and only weekends in winter so check first on their website, which is only in Spanish, but you can get the gist!
Would definately stay here again and highly recommend it.
Oh and for all the Brit teenagers, beware that Mc Ds and Burger King do NOT open till 11am!!! My kids were gutted!

Room Tip: Rooms start on 2nd floor. Street side have balconies and views, rear are quieter.

Hostal Ivor is situated ideally within Madrid...close to the Royal Palace, restaurants, shopping and the Metro. Even the airport can be reached by the Metro. Breakfast is not provided, but there are many cafes close by. Patricia, at the front desk was so helpful. Some reviewers had mentioned that rooms overlooking the street are noisy. I am a very light sleeper, and did not find it noisy at all. The rooms are small, but for the amount of time you spend in it, it's not a big deal. One slight problem I had was entering the building as you had to buzz someone at the front desk. There were times when someone wasn't there, and we had to wait a few minutes to get in. However, that's a small price to pay for a secure environment.

Hostel is in a brilliant location, on a pedestrianized street, close to Opera tube and within walking distance of the Palacio Real. No breakfast, but there is a choice of cafes and restaurants within a minute's walk. The staff are friendly and helpful, and someone is available 24 hours. The room was smallish but very clean. Our room faced away from the street, so it was fairly quiet. The bath was one of those compact ones, which isn't great if you are tall, but the shower was fine. This place is fantastic value if you want a central location and don't want to pay for facilities that you aren't going to use.

Room Tip: Get a room facing away from the street for a quiet

i really recommend this place: it's in the city centre, near the royal theatre and all tourist attractions, and it's clean. Also, the members of staff are welcoming and friendly. The hostal is open 24 hours, so if you return at night time, somebody will always open for you the three locked doors (you feel safe here!). Breakfast is not available, and there is no kettle or a fridge in the room (i was in a double, but i saw a fridge in the bigger rooms), but in the street there are lots of bars open all the time.

Room Tip: all rooms are very good and quite
