Bar Tomate is one of those names that trip off the tongues of the fashionable set in Madrid, and it's certainly attracting a 30 to 40 something crowd who still have money and jobs in these hard times. Interesting menu with some original ideas. But the cooking and execution isn't really up to it, and is rather hit and miss. Great steak but uninteresting chicken; an original tomato starter dish but a stodgy overcooked rice. So good for a pose on a Friday night out but not for a culinary experience.
