“Lots of fun and delicious food”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

An excellent way to sample a wide range of delicious food and drink. Not cheap, but high quality food and drink in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, where you wander from stall to stall choosing whatever takes your fancy. Highly recommended.

“I love this place!”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

This is great indoor market where you can easily hang out for a while. Sit down for some oysters, drink a vino tinto, take a fresh juice, or grab some delicious croquettes. The food is really good and the ambience is fantastic!

“paradise for foodies in beautifully restored market”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Late last year I’d been to this wonderful food market built at the beginning of the 20th century and renovated beautifully a decade ago with its huge glass windows and its delicate ironwork and was anxious to see what my Spanish husband thought of the selection of food and drink available.

We arrived later on a Sunday afternoon – after the crush that’s supposed to take place around noon on Sundays. Even with many people moving around – perhaps more locals than tourists on that day – there was astoundingly little jostling, and we didn’t feel nearly as cramped as we would with similar crowds in Germany. And if you like, you can easily start a conversation with those around you, whether they’re locals or from the other side of the world.

I found the counter in the back of the market that sold the refreshing Madrid punch I’d had on my first trip there – called Limonada de Madrid – that can pull a punch: the “summer wine” with fresh fruit is more powerful than it tastes. We chose a selection of tapas that each alone awakened taste buds I didn’t know I had. We then made our way slowly towards the front where my husband had a huge portion of freshly steamed caracoles (snails) while I enjoyed a huge portion of wild asparagus prepared al dente – with an anchovy tapa on the side.

Since we wanted to do a little walking around Madrid, we tore ourselves away from the luscious desserts – but we’ll definitely be back on each of our future trips to Madrid and maybe catch some of the cultural activities that also take place in the evenings. The Mercado San Miguel located a few steps away from the Plaza Mayor deserves its must-see-and-smell-and-taste-and-enjoy reputation.

“More than shopping, Stop for lunch”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Have one search out a table while the other shops for lunch. Love olives, cheese and ham. This is a great stop for lunch. Add a cold beer. Yum.
