Description: Botin is the oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. Located in the heart of Madrid, at the foot of the Arco de Cuchilleros and next to the Plaza Mayor, it was founded in 1725 and was a meeting place for Madrid's bohemian and literary set. Botin offers Madrid-style hospitality in a convivial and friendly setting, with traditional decor. The restaurant prides itself on using the finest ingredients accredited by the respective quality marks in order to offer guests traditional recipes that have been passed down from father to son over the years, cooked in a natural and artisan way. Its specialties include roast suckling pig and lamb cooked in traditional Castilian style in a wood-fired oven that has been in use since 1725. Botin treats all its diners the same - whether politician, famous artist or its neighbourhood regulars.

We knew going in that this was a bit of a tourist trap, but we wanted to be able to say we had dined at the (allegedly) oldest continually operating restaurant in the world. It was fine, I guess, but of all the meals we had it Madrid, it was the most expensive and least impressive. Honestly, if I had it to do all over again, I'd give it a pass.

Another historic and characterful restaurant in the centre of Madrid. We booked a table in advance and enjoyed the speciality of the house, suckling pig. Delicious. Cost of main course 24.80 euros
Total bill including shared starters and wine and coffee about 44 euros a head.

Beautiful old building - many rickety staircases to navigate but service and food absolutely indifferent . Having had a typically spanish lunch over 4 hours the day before we were in and out of here in just over an hour. The only reason to go is to tick the box of eating in the oldest restaurant in the world. Pretty much only tourists eating there when we had lunch.

Botin is a restaurant icon of Madrid and one of those places you gotta go when you're in Madrid. I highly recommend it, but go for the experience not necessarily the food. It is very good meal but I think you'll get more enjoyment from just being there.

Need to book way ahead as it is in high demand and ask to sit upstairs. And please dress nicely in the evening, no shorts or trainers (I saw some people there, ruins it).

And hats of to the service staff. These are all professionals who you can tell there have worked there for many years.

You will enjoy your meal

Part of the appeal is that it is a tourist trap -- the food is fairly priced and quite good. Dress up a bit -- slacks not shorts and you can get the prime spot on the second floor -- the restaurant is a bit of a labyrinth
