location is very good thats probably the only positive. when we arrived there was no one there so we had to wait on the door step for over an hour we tried ringing and they said they were on there way . they had overbooked so we got taken to an different complex which was obvious it was someones apartment and we stayed for 3 nights there so we didnt get any breakfast which was supposed to be included. 8 months later the place has gone on to charge me again for the room so i would recommend you pay cash and dont let them have your credit card details

Stayed at Hostal Oxum, Madrid for three nights as part of rail tour holiday of Spain.

The hostal is less than 10 mins walk from three metro stations and so you are well connected with the city.

The entrance is off putting: you enter through a caged door, down a corridor and up several creaky flights of steps in an old building to reach the rooms and reception. The staff spoke little english, though just enough. The hotel is on the third floor with no lift, so this would not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

Our room was great: had a contemporary feel with balcony. Bathroom was adequate and with shower unit but no bath. There was free WiFi, but the connection was erratic. Breakfast was included and provided as packs to the combined room cupboard and fridge. The fridge was a good size and useful if you wanted to bring your drinks back. Once the balcony doors were shut, the room was quite, so sleep was not a problem.

The hostal is a great part of the city: the Chueca area which is full of lively bars and late drinking in the nearby square of the same name. This is a gay area of the Madrid, so might be more enjoyable for same sex couples or gay travellers generally.

Most of the major attractions were less than 20 mins walk from the hostal. Though if that's too far to walk, Madrid's Metro is excellent and cheap at €1 per trip. So getting around is never a problem.

Would certainly return, if only for the lively area and lovely rooms.

Lovely looking room. Decent continental breakfast, though a kettle would have been nice as opposed to a microwave to boil water. It was a bit cold, the heating didn't seem to be doing much.

Lights in hallway are not very well planned nor did they work very well. One kept flicking on and off and the one in the entrance could only be turned on at the door (ok if you're coming in, but not good at all when leaving your room) so left you to negotiate a stretch in complete darkness.

First morning we didn't have any hot water for a shower. Toilet also broke on the last day (cystern wasn't filling so we had to fill it from the tap).

Overall a good experience.

Great accommodations in Madrid. Only complaint is that there is no elevator and the rooms are 3 floors up. Other than that it is a great place. Cozy and great location.

Me and my boyfriend booked a room for two nights at this hostal in July, as well an airport transfer, and we also paid a small amount in advance. On December 1st, subsequent to an e-mail sent by me, we were informed that the airport transfer was no longer possible. Two days later, we were again informed - by e-mail!!! - that one of the pipes of the hostal had broken down and that it was no longer possible for them to offer us accommodation... No refund was offered. We were to arrive in Madrid on December 6th, so we were very very lucky to find any rooms available in another hotel... I was very disappointed and they've nearly ruined our holiday, because of their lack of professionalism!!

The entrance to this hostal is less than impressive as it is via a shabby, littered doorway which leads to 64 well worn and dingy, wooden stairs in what appears a semi derelict building. That said, once inside the hostal it is a different story. Stylish bright and clean. There is no reception desk just rooms off a corridor. We were handed our keys and shown the room facilities. After that we did not see a staff member for over 48 hours which was a problem as we had no basin tap and our balcony door would not close (it was 5 degrees overnight) The rooms were exceptionally clean and towels changed daily. Breakfast was packaged cakes, yoghurt, juice and cereal left in the room overnight with tea/coffe making facilities.
The bathroom was miniscule with the tiniest shower, if you dropped something it was difficult to bend over to retreive it. (we are small people) We had a superior room which was an additional €30 per night, and deffinitely not worth the extra cost .It was only a little bigger, and this was outweighed by the fact that it was facing the road and we were kept awake by the most incredible amount of noise, traffic, bin men, delivery drivers and car horns. the Metro would have been more peaceful. It went on all night. We had to use earplugs.
We would happily have changed to a standard room without refund but with no staff on site we were not able to ask for this. The night before we left we finally encountered the manager and were able to get a plug, we also pointed out that the door would not shut. He became agressive saying "Are you just looking for things" "I am waiting for a specialist to fix it, I don't know when he will come". The next morning we discovered that no breakfast had been put in our room, and we had to wonder if we were being punished, but no, our friends had none in their room either. The manager came and asked us to pack our cases and leave them in his locked office for safety. We pointed out that the room was paid for until 1pm and we would be leaving our cases there until then. He became enraged and said we could not do this he wanted to clean the room. He even threatened to call the Police, he was so out of control. We were all totally shocked by his attitude over such a simple matter. We asked for the complaint book and agreed to him calling the police if he wanted too, at which point he backed down completely. At this point we decided to mentioned the lack of breakfast, he said we were lying and he had seen the girl put breakfast in our rooms. The welcome third of a bottle of Cava was very nice but if he thinks gestures make up for manners he will not last long in the service industry. We would not recommend this hostel

We have lived in Spain for ten years, so it is not a case of not understanding the culture. This was blatant bad attitude.

I was at Hostal Oxum in downtown Madrid and I was delighted with the place, the service is excellent, the rooms are very modern, beautiful and clean and I felt in a big hotel really paying very little, apart had many tourist sites in Madrid near. Really is more than a Hostel and stayed there ever return to Spain.
