“Beautiful Ancient Setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2013

In the charming town of Haro, Located in the fabled wine growing region of La Rioja stands Hotel Los Agustinos. Founded in 1373 as a convent, it went on to be a military garrison, hospital, school and prison. They say you can still see inscriptions carved into the stone by its prisoners. The hotel combines very old history with very new upgrades.

Sitting in the majestic courtyard with its grand piano, comfortable couches and english music playing...We discussed having a bite... at 11pm as is the custom in Spain - you eat late. A mixed plate of Iberico ham, olives, manchego cheese, tuna, and various sausages were washed down by 3 bottles: a 1998 Viura from Tondonia (still lovely) and two reds: Campeador 1997 and a 2006 Reserva from Contino. It was heaven.

The rooms are a nice size, very comfortable with a choice of window overlooking the quite streets of the town, or the beautiful courtyard. They offer Wi fi which works well, air con, hairdryer, room service, a buffet breakfast, and a great wine list for dinner.

You are within a half hour in every direction of some of the most excellent wineries in the world.
If you can tolerate the standoffish staff - (the men mostly) it is a great place to stay. It was hard to miss the feeling that we were only being tolerated by the staff.

Even with that, I recommend this hotel - it was stunning and the town of Haro is beautiful.

Room Tip: IF you want fresh air, get a room on the street side.

Stayed for 2 nights at the start of our holiday. Arrived at the the hotel and was pleased to discover that they offered valet parking. Historic building full of character with a central courtyard. Good size room on suite ok but could hear next door in the shower. Friendly and informative staff. Will definitely stay here again.

Our room was bigger than most rooms we had in Spain. Great service and great Internet Wi-fi. Expect 4 star prices including breakfast at 20+ per person. Amazing settings and worth the stay. Great check-in and they offer parking for a fee, but plenty of parking on the streets around the hotel.

Stayed for just one at this hotel in the centre of Haro - the building is so full of character and history.
The staff at the hotel seemed quite formal and not the friendliest bunch. There is valet parking as the garage is off site which we found useful.
The interior common areas are done in a very modern design - not really our taste thought it may have benefited from being more in keeping with the character of the building itself.
Our room faced the inner courtyard and was really comfortable - two doors between the bedroom and corridors - great help with noise insulation. Think the bathrooms could do with a bit of an upgrade.
The view from window into the courtyard at night was most impressive with all the stonework of the building and lights around the walls. The courtyard was well used in the evening and created a nice atmosphere.
Didn't eat at the hotel but ventured out both for dinner and breakfast - so couldn't comment on the food.
Enjoyed the one night stay and Haro was a fun place to be during Festival time.
A little smile from some of the staff wouldn't go amiss though.

Everything we wanted in a hotel, wonderful character, dining room in the cloisters. Dining was a delight.
Bar with huge choice of drinks by the glass at moderate prices including three rosadas (blush wine).
Some bed rooms overlook the cloisters, others the street.

Room Tip: I would prefer a room overlooking the cloisters to the street view. But our street view room viewed...

Good place for visiting the wine region. Rooms ok especially as they have a second door separating the entrée from the bedroom. Bathroom poor - this must be the only hotel which has no Kleenex even if you ask for it! Bed ok but terrible foam pillow. Very good breakfast with eggs of all kinds but nobody says "good morning". Staff at reception not friendlier. Neither at the bar. Make sure you do not take an inside room - one of the nights there was a large wedding. Thanks to the two doors on this outside room, we were not disturbed but friends who had an inside room (there are very few) did not sleep until party broke up. One evening we had dinner at the hotel - it was ok and not expensive.
Altogether a rather pleasant place.

Room Tip: Avoid inside room

This hotel is over rated and in need of a face lift. Our high end travel agency booked us into a large exterior room, but when we found it smelling of cigarette smoke, we had to accept a much smaller substitute on the interior courtyard without a window to the outside fresh air. We didn't mind the size and were glad to have the air conditioner, but we did not get what we paid for.

The room was clean and the bed and pillows comfortable, but the furniture, carpet, and bathroom vanity all needed updating. We did not have hot water the first morning which the management blamed on a ciity-wide problem. One afternoon we sat in the large interior courtyard which dates from its days as a convent in the 14th century. We opened a bottle of lovely wine from the surrounding Rioja area, then went to the bar to request some cheeses and bread. We discovered that there was no food service, not even in the bar (depressing by itself), before 8:30pm. This four star hotel refused to serve anything other than potato chips before its restaurant opened for dinner.

Finally, this ancient courtyard which could be an impressive interior space, is instead ruined by tacky lighting, outdated furniture, and other pieces of odd decor that detract from the elegant arches and soaring glass ceiling. They would not have stood for this in Madrid.
My advice is to stay in a less pretentious hotel and save your money for a really good one elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking and an exterior room with window on the outside.z
