Given the money spent on the public areas (which are imposing and full of designer touches) we were surprised to stay in a room that was old-fashioned and in fact a bit shabby. This hotel is not cheap, so that was disappointing. We ate in the hotel as well - the wine was, as one would expect in Haro, superb and well-served, but the food service was almost laughably bad (rude). We stayed here early in our travels in northern Spain, so thought this might be normal - but nowhere else did we experience this kind of treatment. Overall - disappointing!

I agree the rooms do not match the lobby but frankly the lobby decor doesn't match the building. This is an extremely old building that was a convent, prison, and now a hotel. I was not expecting modern, updated rooms. The rooms had old style furniture that fit with the building. The room we were in was huge and had beautiful wooden windows. The location cannot be beat. You are steps away from the plaza where you can enjoy great pintxos. We were presently surprised with the town and we ate very well one night going from bar to bar.

My only complaint regarding this hotel was the staff. They were unfriendly and unhelpful. Breakfast was excellent for a continental. Great pan y tomate!!

I love this hotel: I first went there just a couple of weeks after it had opened in 1989, and have been going back ever since, with business colleagues, on my own, and with family. It's been a while since my last visit and a great deal has changed: most notably the cloister, which used to be open to the elements, has been roofed over with glass and turned into an atrium area. In the old days the cloister was a magical place when the sun shone, but dismal when it rained, so I can understand why the management didn't want to lose half its ground-floor space when the weather was bad and they have, to be fair, converted it into an elegant meeting place.

The rooms, too, have changed: they used to have a Parador-style, rather 'Spartan' feel (and none the worse for that) but my room this time had stylish candystripe drapes, a large work area, flat screen TV and the most comfortable bed of my entire trip.

The restaurant inside the hotel is Las Duelas, under chef Juan Nales, I ate there on my last visit (2004), although in those days the restaurant was across the road, within the hotel annexe, before the recent alterations, and it was excellent. So... Sorry, another disappointment. Yet again (see my recent review of Loidi in Barcelona) our group leader had ordered a set menu for all of us which was deeply underwhelming, consisting mainly of fish, fish, and more fish. I love fish, but after four days in Spain I (and a number of my colleagues) were suffering severe meat-deprivation. I shall go back, however, and order from the carte!

Room Tip: Room 107 now safe: the flourmill closed in 2008

The lounge/communal area in the hotel is lovely and they'd obviously spent a lot of money on it but sadly the actual bedroom was disappointing. The bathroom was fine but the main bedroom was tired with a stained and threadworn carpet and only just big enough for the main bed and a cot. The style also didn't match the main lounge as it was a bit twee but could have been stylish and modern.
We paid 90 euros for a double room without breakfast, which wasn't great value for the area. They offered us parking for an extra 14 euros a day but there are metered parking spaces outside that are free to 10 am and then 1.20 euros to 3pm. We didn't spend much time in the nicest part because the minimum charge for a drink (including coffee) in the lounge is 3 euros, 1 more than the nearest Parador!

Very stylish hotel, magnificent inner courtyard to relax on huge sofas. Rooms were very comfortable and big 9double beds each). Had no problems with the staff, they were very polite, helpful and friendly.
We didn't eat at the hotel because we wanted to see Haro which is an interesting little town, very proud of being centre of the Riojo region. Lots of Tapas bars and some good restaurants (the one on top floor of restaurant on square is a find)

This wonderful old building was situated in the centre of Haro and therfore with reach of all restaurants etc. The staff were very helpful and parking was also available. The rooms were spacious, clean and reasonably priced. We didn't eat here as there were too many good bars etc near by to avail ourselves of wonderful tapas! Free internet access was also available.

Fabulous ancient building with huge contemporary inner courtyard ,rooms dull lacking luxury. Front of desk staff not interested in attending to clients, extremely rude and unhelpful, lacking in basic knowledge of english or other language. Waiting staff appear miserable and not prepared to serve you unless you pester them.Needs a major overhaul on hospitality front from top management to the bottom.
