“Excellent little place”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

Have been to this restaurant several times & cannot fault them. Lovely friendly staff who wait on every need, checking you are ok & topping up your wine. Food is delicious & good sizes, they also give free tasters while you wait for main & then a shot of palette cleanser after your meal. Such a nice setting as well, very romantic!

“All round excellence”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

Those visitors to Gibraltar who find their way to Chatham Counterguard are in for a culinary and wine drinking surprise as during the last eighteen months the Gibraltar Government has made available the original 18th century armoury magazines for development. This has led to a section of these magazines being occupied by a wine shop, a tasting bar, two tapas bars and the Casa Brachetto one of the finest Itaalian restaurants on the Rock.

This is the only restaurant that uses pasta from Gragnano which is a small town wedged between a mountain crest and the coast of Amalfi in Southern Italy. For the food buff Gragnano pasta was awarded the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) mark in 1910. This is largely due to the mixing of durum wheat flour with the pure local groundwater which enjoys a fragrance of ripe wheat which has a distinctive taste.

It is a small restaurant and it is advisable to book be the meal lunch or dinner. The décor is stunning with the walls and floor being the original stones. The use of photographs is most successful with the photographs across the ceiling being scenes of an Italian village.

The menu is small which means that each dish is cooked to perfection. The chef is on view and can be watched whilst cooking, always a bonus for customers. The menu consists of Antipasta, Pasta and Risotto, Salads, Pizza and Calzone, Puddings and Cheese. Meat and fish are limited to three dishes, Salmone Impanato con pomodoro; Petto di Pollo con crema e gamberi; Bistecca di Manzo. However fish lovers need not be disappointed as many of the pasta dishes include tiger prawns and fresh salmon.

My party of four shared bruschetta ( £ 2.95 ), aubergine parmigiana ( £5.95 ) garlic bread with mozzarella ( £ 3.25 ) and antipasto casa brachetto ( £ 8.95 ). Frankly it was all too much but not a crumb was left. The aubergine parmigiana was as good as any served in Soho, London, the garlic bread divine and the selection of Italian salami and cured Parma ham mouth wateringly excellent.

Two of us had the dish of the day which was a huge plate of pasta vesuvio with ham and mushrooms (£ 9.95), one guest who had partaken too well with the antipasto had a small portion of risotto del giorno ( £ 4.95 ) and the other lasagne Bolognese ( £ 9.95 ). All dishes were outstanding and cooked to perfection.

These were such large portions so we were unable to try any of the puddings. The service was immaculate, swift and the waiter offered to take the mandatory group photograph. He was asked to sit down and have his photo taken with the party and said that this was the first time this had ever happened to him.

The house red wine is a very acceptable Chianti.

Casa Brachetto almost earned a five star rating. It was only let down by the lavatory arrangements. All the cluster of bars and restaurants have to use a communal lavatory which is for the exclusive use of patrons. It is situated at the end of the complex and a key is provided. Because of its constant use, although clean, it is whiffy. This has nothing to do with the restaurant as there is no space for an individual loo in each establishment .

It was an excellent dining experience and we shall return.

“Omg the carbonara de luxe was yummy !!!”
Reviewed November 29, 2013 via mobile

Went for lunch on thurs 28th and the special was the carbonara de luxe - it was just amazing that soft poached egg on the top was perfect, the starters were really good too and we didn't have room for dessert but managed a bottle of their signature wine. Been thinking of the carbonara all day. A true italian restaurant

“welcome addition!”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

I had heard good things from colleagues about casa brachetto so decided to try it. We had a very enjoyable meal in a relaxed atmosphere with good service, I nearly always ask for a glass of house red when eating out, as a measure of the quality on offer and was not disappointed with this offering. Overall a good experience, we will be back!
