“This fine hotel NEVER lets you down”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

We have stayed at the Rock on many occasions. Its a fine old hotel. Steeped in the finer things in life. From the moment that you arrive, you are made to feel that you are a returning "relation" and your attendance is valued. The rooms are well presented. And are very comfortable. Many of the staff have been at the Rock for many many years. The barman for over 34 years. The Dinning room manager for 22 years. Breakfast at the Rock is an event. There is more food available than you could possibly want. From continental to the full English and them some. My wife tells me that she counted over 15 types of bread.I agree with some of my fellow reviewers that the old girl is getting a bit frayed around the edges and some of the public areas need a bit of a face lift. But I understand that there is a structured bill of works that are being carried out.

Dear cadet1Bude_Cornwall, Thank you for taking the time to write. Your encouraging feedback is appreciated. I am happy to confirm that the face lift you allude to is still very much on the horizon so, as they say, watch this space! Thank you once more.

Dear Terry C, Thank you for your contribution to these pages, I am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us last year. As you can imagine a makeover on the scale contemplated for the Rock comes with a huge amount of detail and decision and it is true the commencement date has been somewhat extended on this basis. However, plans are progressing well and the moment we have a firm programme of works we shall of course be sharing this with everyone and in particular with our loyal and patient regular customers. Thank you once more.

We stayed for 2 nights and given some previous reviews, were not expecting too much. We had a very pleasant and spacious room which was also quiet. On our first evening meal we chose from the A la Carte menu which was truly dreadful - felt like Hercule Poirot meets Basil Fawlty. Breakfasts made up for this, a great buffet of Continental and British favourites. The second evening meal was from the Table D'Hote menu and was much better.
The Hotel has real charm but desperately needs refurbished, signs of water ingress and paint flaking. This is an iconic 30's style art deco hotel Please speed up the refurbish before it's too late. All staff most helpful.

Room Tip: Try to have a room on a higher floor, otherwise the apes (macaques) may climb onto your balcony!

I am sat overlooking the sea writing this review on our last morning at the Rock Hotel

Sadly the state of the hotel has meant that many people are writing similar reviews

Our room 221 is shabby , holes in the bed covers, bathroom mouldy tiles , leaky loo and worse of all not very clean . We complained and it was re cleaned . The bedside light was broken and could not be repaired and the windows dirty
Breakfast was awful the first day we arrived at 9 40 to be told "you are late " which accounted for cold breakfast as thy had turned off the heaters that kept the food warm. We asked for fresh food and were again told we were late so it was our fault - great customer service!

To be fair we talked to the GM and she must of talked to her staff as the dinner and breakfast today were very good . We had the set evening meal which was very good the evening staff can't do enough for you

The bar and lounge areas are fine but gardens a mess which is sad as they could be so lovely however the pool area is fab

This place is due to be updated but I would not suggest a stay till it is

Room Tip: Have one from floor 2 upwards with a balcony

We have just spent the weekend at The Rock Hotel. The hotel is very dated and needs a jolly good paint, the rooms are fine, and the bathrooms could probably do with ripping out, that said, we had a wonderful here. It is a little bit like stepping back in time. The staff are lovely, the hotel lobby is incredibly spacious with tons of sofas to collapse on after the walk back from town, the veranda is beautiful, the breakfasts delicious. I would not hesitate in staying here again. We even had a visit in our first few minutes on our balcony, of an ape and her baby, who sat there and groomed each other for about half an hour in front of us.

Room Tip: When walking back to the hotel from town, walk back though The Botanical Gardens. Far less exhausti...

this was my 1st stay in the rock and wasnt disapointed, the rooms were nice but a bit dated, the windows and door to the balcony were of an old style, metal and not that effecient keeping the noise out, we had great views on a clear day you could see africa and had a great view of all the boats coming and going. the breakfast was good always hot and plentyfull, the reception area and resturant and the bar area was very nice, the free internet was a plus but the down side is that you cant pick it up in all the rooms we had to go down to the foyer area to pick it up, but all round i would recommend this hotel, there are a few bus stops close to the hotel and only a few minutes walk to main street, there is a steep incline getting up to the hotel if walking

Room Tip: ask for a see view and a room that picks up the internet

Dear afrobain, Thank you for your review. You will be pleased to note that double glazing will be a major feature after our refurbishment - we have a pilot room completed and the effects of double glazing are impressive indeed. Thank you for indicating that you would recommend us, this is much appreciated. We hope to see you again.

I have stayed at this hotel 3 times before and every time the standards are a little less
This hotel must boast the best view overlooking the bay it is fasinating watching the going ons in the town and bay from the balcony, having said that the hotel is looking very tired and the service is not as crisp as you would expect but it is up for a major referb shortly hopefully it will return to its glory days when film stars and the like visited .
The hotel is situated about half way up the rock so it is a fair walk up the hill but it is only a10 minutes walk from the Waterfront where there are some great eateries and bars

Room Tip: all rooms look over the bay and town my wife recons the higher floor the better

Dear fairplay101054, I was sorry to read that as a three-time repeat client you feel that your experience has seemingly diminished over a period. If you would e-mail me personally with some specifics I would welcome the chance to respond and react and to ensure that any future stays are memorable in the more accepted sense. Thank you.
