“old fashioned charm”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

Staying here is like a trip back in time!
The rooms are comfortable, views from the balcony spectacular, and watching the apes on the roof of the dining room is cute!
Don't omit to see the writing desks in the lounge area, which could have been on the Titanic. However it does have free Wifi, hurrah, so you can bypass using them!
We only had (buffet) breakfasts in the hotel, which were OK, not special. The weird thing was that the tables by the window were set so that you looked into the restaurant, rather than out to the view. Had the feeling of an old age pensioners care home!
But definitely a not to be missed experience.
Use the local buses to get around Gib. CHEAP!!

Dear nefertari2, Thank you for your critique. Your points are welcome and the particular point regarding the setting of our window seating - although there is some logic involved - will be reviewed. Thank you.

We stayed again in Feb 2013 with some friends coming along for the weekend too. There have been some changes in Management for the Rock and their are refurbishments ongoing to the Pool area(Open April I think). We had a good time and the best things about the Rock Hotel namely the View, WiFi, easy parking, the friendly staff and service are still there; so are the Apes - one in the room again which is OK for us but if you have young children please be alert. I do think the Rock needs to get a handle on the food which is not good enough and upgrade some of the rooms which are getting tired. On the other hand the Rock Hotel is quite reasonably priced. If you want to eat out I'd recommend the Casino/Marina Bay area or Gauchos and if you have an afternoon get a taxi to the Sottogrande marina area where you have some good restaurants and bars.
The Gibraltar Duty Free is still terrific value(£22 for 200 Malborough, 6.50 for a litre of gin) as is car rental.

Room Tip: Ask reception, rooms vary a lot in size and date of finish. Recommend booking direct but get written...

Dear fortysix, Thank you for your comments. It would appear that you enjoyed your stay but I note your observations about our food, for which we have a coveted AA rosette. I apologise that we did not meet your expectations but cannot react specifically as you haven't really given detail as to what you felt our shortcomings were. If you would e-mail me personally I can then take remedial action where required. This would be appreciated.

This is a first class experience. It's built against the base of The Rock so every room looks out across the the bay. At night, there were 30+ vessels at anchor with their lights on, with the lights of Spain behind them. It appears that every room has a balcony with chairs and table to enhance your viewing pleasure. Rooms were spotless and spacious, perhaps a bit conventional after some of the boutique hotels in Spain. Dinner in the fancy restaurant was REALLY good; dinner in the less fancy restaurant/bar was less and still excellent. Staff was super, esp Michael at the front desk who was very helpful and patient. Others have written that it appeared in need of refurbishment; it certainly did not appear that way to us. It's a short walk to Main Street, but note that it's uphill for part of the way back. The Gardens and the cable car entrance are conveniently across the street. `Other than the uphill walk, The Rock is an all-around winner.

Room Tip: They appear all to be pretty much the same with the same view over the bay toward Algeceiras.

Spent 4 nights at the Rock Hotel Gibraltar. Great location overlooking harbour. Hotel staff very friendly and attentive. Hotel environment very relaxing, lounge area, bar and resturant very smart and quiet and relaxing to sit down in and take in the views.
Hotel does look very tired both externally and internally, requires a major re-decoration and refurbishment, didn't spoil our stay though. Would recommend hotel for a short break.
Food quality good, despite some negative views already published we found breakfast to be good and evening meal very good, despite being a little expensive it was good value for money.

Room Tip: We had a 3rd floor room which was fine, other than needing a lick of paint. higher risk of apes bein...

My wife and I staid here for a night while on our honeymoon. The GPS was unable to find it, so we had to loop around a bit before we found it, but it is actually off a fairly main road. I do not believe the hotel has been updated since at least the 80s, but there was nothing awful about it, just a bit dated. The main draw is the balcony with a view of the straight. Truly awesome view. In fact, by computer background currently is the view from my balcony. The other noteworthy thing mentioning is the monkeys. There is a sign on the balcony saying not to feed the monkeys, which of course meant my wife immediately put food outside. When we woke up, there was a monkey siting on our balcony. He was pulling on the weather stripping and very interested in our room. Ultimately he sat on the railing and enjoyed the view for a bit before leaving. So expect to see monkeys on your balcony. Overall, I enjoyed my stay, dont know that I would go out of my way to return.

I stayed here on business for three nights in March 2013 for business. A taxi ride from the airport is £9 if you want to walk it will be about 45 minutes.

The hotel reception is bright and airy and we were offered a complimentary sherry whilst we checked in. The staff were very friendly throughout and the food was nice.

We stayed in a twin room and had an amazing balcony view. If you come to Gib this is the hotel to stay at!

BUT

the hotel is in need of some comprehensive refurbishment; to start with a lick of paint. The only thing stopping me from giving the hotel a 5 star rating is the decor. I am hoping to take my wife back later this year

The hotel is a gem and having a beer in the lounge whilst admiring the view is a must

Please restore this hotel to its former glory!

Room Tip: If staying here don't spend money on a suite or penthouse until the rooms have been redecorated...

Polite, helpful service throughout our 3 night stay. Rooms comfortable but in need of refurbishment. We found the rooms quite cold during the night so you need to bring your thickest pj's! Very steep climb back to the hotel so if you have trouble walking make sure you come back to the hotel by taxi.
Fantastic views from the bedroom balcony and also wonderful terrace to sit in the sun and chill out with a glass of wine. Breakfast was excellent and the bar meals were good value.
