“Gibralter stay”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

An excellent hotel, good service and excellent food. Beautiful views across the straits to Africa and up the coast of Spain. A short taxi ride from the centre of the town, a good walk down and taxi back as rather hilly location. Would recommend to anyone wishing a stay in Gibralter

We have stayed at the Rock previously and have always enjoyed ourselves.I am pleased to confirm that the hotel is as good as ever, the standard of service is excellent, the food was really good and the wonderful ambience of the hotel is unchanged.
I would thoroughly recommend the Rock Hotel to anyone visiting Gibraltar.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms have spectacular views over the Bay of Gibraltar and are very quiet.

I have nothing that bad to say about this hotel, all staff were more than helpful and extremely welcoming. Back in the day this hotel would have been great but it is looking a bit tired and needs a bit of a refurb. My room was nice but just need a repaint as some was chipped and faded. I expect a bit more for a 4 star hotel. The bathroom had been recently decorated but lacked the finishing touch I would associate with a four star hotel. Breakfast was of good quality. If you have a balcony be very vigilant and make sure your rear door is locked. The Apes are very clever little chaps and will get in to raid your room for food. If your walking back from the town centre then get ready for a walk up hill but its very good for walking off a nice dinner.

My first visit to Gibraltar ! Would certainly recommend this hotel. Set in the Rock, high up lovely views, all rooms face the sea. Apes all around. Very close to the cable car, can walk to town, taxi very reasonable.
Excellent breakfast, much choice. Great atmosphere, very special , Will certainly come again..
All rooms have balcony with spectacular views.
Lots of rain, but did not spoil our visit.

This was my second stay at The Rock (the first being in 2010). I returned because there's something engaging about the place - something that is familiar, safe and comforting. Is it perfect? No? But it is special. A shadow of a bygone era that I hope will remain as a part of Gibraltar as the apes.
There are plenty of reviews that cover what The Rock is lacking (on-trend decor & furniture - and in need of a bit of a general spruce up) - I want to compliment The Rock for its exemplary staff and comment on its benefits. Every staff member I encountered was courteous and professional. Very helpful in organising private hire taxis and other knowledge. The rooms are generously sized with fantastic big beds, a fridge, TV, large wardrobes and other storage areas, trouser press, hair dryer, balconies and big modern bathrooms.
Housekeeping did a great job, always a good selection of complimentary hot drinks and biscuits, and plenty of bath towels.
There are lots of areas to sit and take in the stunning views of the bay and on a clear day you can see Africa whist sitting sipping a drink in the bar or on your balcony.
The Wisteria Terrace was a lovely as I remembered. A real pleasure to spend time there. Great views and a great atmosphere. The bar staff were really great. Make sure you check out all the history adorning the walls of the bar.
Breakfast is amazing. An incredibly wide range of hot and cold items. One of the best buffet breakfasts I've had in Europe.
Wifi is free to use in the public areas, but not available in the rooms which is my only minor complaint. But at least they don't charge where you can access it which is really refreshing and a nice touch.
I've heard alot about the supposed renovations that keep getting pushed back. I welcome them if they do but it certainly would not put me off staying here if they don't.
As long as the owners retain the charm and sense of history that makes this hotel such an icon then I'll be happy.
To sum things up - I would highly recommend this hotel. If you come looking to pick holes and find faults, you'll certainly find them. But if you come expecting to stay in an historic survivor of a hotel, a grand dame of Mediterranean hotels, then you most certainly will not be disappointed.

I cannot wait to stay here again!

Ps - the new Gibraltar International Airport is amazing. Very very impressed!

Dear Horizonx30, Thank you for your review, which is fair and well observed and encapsulates much of what the Rock is about. Your comments about our staff are especially pleasing to note. It is certainly our intention to retain the charm you allude to whilst moving the hotel forward, adding a number of more contemporary concepts that we believe will sit well alongside the more traditional, giving us a more rounded product for the future. Thank you once more and we look forward to seeing again...........and again!

My wife and I enjoyed a pleasant weekend in Gib and stayed at this hotel for two nights. We were welcomed with a glass of sherry from a most obliging receptionist. Our room was large. It had to be to accommodate what I can only call a super kingsize bed.The room was very comfortable with a small balcony overlooking the spectacular harbour with views of both Spain and Morocco. We enjoyed the evening meal so much that we ate there both nights. The service in the restaurant was excellent and in keeping with an "old world" hotel. In fact the service throughout the hotel was first class. Reading some previous comments on the hotel it is true that it needs a refurbishment and I understand this is due to commence shortly. I only hope they do not lose the elegance of this dear "old lady".Over the years hotels of this type have gradually disappeared so I can only hope it maintains its character.

Dear fredcheckley, Thank you for your kind words. We are certainly keen to retain much of the spirit that you allude to in your review. It is our intention to strike the perfect balance between the legacy we have going back to the 1930s with a number of much needed improvements and enhancements that will take us into a new era. I hope that when you return after the work is completed you will approve. Thanks once more.

Stayed here from 20 to 23 Feb 2013, excellent stay staff very helpful, had to move rooms as no wi-fi in first room, apart from that really enjoyable 3 day break, invasion of monkeys but you can put up with them, great food & service, reception staff very helpful. The only thing I can say is that the outside needs a paint job & the balconies/terraces could do with a good was down, but otherwise extremely nice place to stay, very old world style.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great sea view
